Sláinte To The Irish Moses

At the age of sixteen, Saint Patrick was sold into slavery and taken from his British homeland to Ireland in 432. Legend has it that he rid the island of snakes, but that is unlikely as Ireland’s climate and topography were never snake friendly. Saint Patrick is however, credited with bringing Christianity to the Emerald Isle. He died on this day in 461.

Until the 1970s, St. Patrick’s Day was a dry holiday. Fortunately for Arthur Guinness, someone saw the error of those ways, and now an expected 13 million pints of Guinness will be consumed today.

Important Note: The Irish DO NOT colour their beer green.

When William Lyons introduced his new Jaguar model at the Geneva International Motor Show in 1961, the E-Type roadster was met with instant success. The great Enzo Ferrari said upon seeing Lyons’ design, the E-Type Jaguar is “the most beautiful car ever made”.

Listen to Your Mother

Israel’s own Iron Lady, Golda Meir became Prime Minister in 1969 at the age of seventy. She was the Jewish Homeland’s first, and only female Prime Minister. She served as the country’s leader for four years and guided a successful but costly result in the Yom Kippur War.

Perhaps her most famous and most poignant quote came when she was asked about a resolution timeline for the conflict in the Middle East;

“When the Arabs love their children more than they hate us.”

Words for all who live with hate to heed.

Musical Milestones

Spinal Tap reunites in 1992 and releases a tribute album to their former manager (who they hated), and name the record Break Like The Wind. The popularity for this ‘rockumentary’ creation is so big, the album features guest appearances from Jeff Beck, Slash, Joe Satriani, and Cher.

Fittingly, there’s also a drum machine that explodes during a recording session.

Narratives

This one’s a stretch but the rubber band was patented by British inventor, Steven Perry in 1845.

Remembrance

1993 — First female EGOT winner and dubbed “First Lady of American Theatre", Helen Hayes died at the age of 92.

Notable Births
