Former World Champion boxer Jack Dempsey who was born on this day in 1895, once famously said,

“A champion is someone who gets up when he can’t.”

You can’t put it better than that. Time to get off the mat and start anew. I’m very pleased to bring Day Tripping to a new home; WRITE UNDER THE MOON!

Today is:

Swim A Lap Day — Fun and good for you, swimming has been a fitness activity as far back as ancient times where swimmers were depicted on hieroglyphic drawings. If you don’t have a pool to swim in, take a couple of turns in your tub. Stroke!

Fairy Day — A children’s favourite for generations, fairies have happily engrained themselves in popular culture around the globe. Mythological figures abound, so find your favourite movie featuring these loveable gnomes, or pull out a copy of your favourite fairy tale. Magic!

Pralines Day — Need I say more? Mmmmm! Work them off with a swim.

I Swear It’s True

With a vote of 6–3 by the United States Supreme Court in 1957, they ruled that obscenity is not protected free speech under the First Amendment. The landmark Rith v. United States case upheld the conviction of writer Samuel Roth, charged in New York State with sending lewd and obscene material through the US Mail. A fellow entrepreneur, David Alberts of California was also convicted for a similar mail-order business. Apparently, free speech does have its limitations.

Musical Ride

A poem written by Adolphe-Basile Routhier was put to music by Canada’s National Musician, Calixa Lavallée. The first performance of O Canada took place in 1880 at the Congrès national des Canadiens-Français (National Congress of French Canadian), the same day France introduced its new Republican Constitution.

After several amendments to the lyrics over the course of a hundred years, O Canada was officially recognized as the country’s national anthem in 1980.

1497 — Believing he had found Asia in Nova Scotia, John Cabot claimed Canada’s eastern islands for England.

1509 — Henry VIII was coronated King of England at Westminster Abbey. He will order his fourth wife, Anne of Cleves to be beheaded thirty-one years to the day later.

Gone But Not Forgotten

Jackie Gleason was the first major sitcom star and a pioneer of the television variety show. He also made a memorable performance as Minnesota Fats in The Hustler. He died in 1987 at 71.

Eli Wallach was the unforgettable nemesis of Clint Eastwood in the Spaghetti Westerns of the nineteen sixties and seventies. The great character actor appeared in over 90 films. He died at the age of 98 in 2014.

Notable Births

1942 — Drummer and vocalist for The Bluesbreakers and then with his namesake Fleetwood Mac, Mick Fleetwood

1944 —Incredibly talented lead guitar player Jeff Beck was a key member of the Yardbirds. The much sought after musician has played with Rod Stewart, David Bowie, and many huge artists of the rock era. He was approached by the Rolling Stones to replace Brian Jones and considered for replacement of Syd Barrett in Pink Floyd.
