Day Tripping: August 19
Aviation Innovation

History will never forget the two famous brothers who gave us flight. In 1871, the younger Orville Wright was born in Dayton, Ohio. Thirty-two years later with his brother Wilbur, they accomplished what many thought to be impossible.
“If we worked on the assumption that what is accepted as true really is true, then there would be little hope for advance.”
The year after the Kitty Hawk triumph. European experts cast doubts on the veracity of their achievement. Orville survived his brother and went on to a successful career in aviation. Neither of them married.
In his later years, Orville expressed regrets about the effects of their invention after witnessing the ravages of World War II. He said, “We dared to hope we had invented something that would bring lasting peace to the earth. But we were wrong.”
Today is:
World Humanitarian Day — a day we should consider more often.
Soft Ice Cream Day — same as above.
Musical Ride
On the Dick Cavett Show in 1969, Crosby, Stills and Nash talked about their experiences at Woodstock the weekend before. Joni Mitchell debuted her song, Woodstock, which she wrote about the festival even though he never appeared there.
Interesting Notes
Frank Wisner invented the Root Beer Float in 1893. Maybe, but I’ll bet my old man made it better!
