Day 4–100 Days Being Visible

Use what you already know

This morning my plan for the day was to spend time reflecting on my goals for this project and making them more tangible. I had intended to develop a game analogy and declare the rules of the game and the criteria for winning the game. It is 10:05 pm, the day got away, and I did not do this.

The day got away when I faced a small crisis of visibility. I had blocked out time to write a blog I promised a colleague I would publish this week. I am free to write whatever I like within the broad topic of ‘leadership presence’. Instead of writing the blog, I caught up on other necessary tasks related to the same leadership program to which the blog is relevant. I did important work that required me to be visible to a few people and avoided the work that would have had me visible to many people, including people whose opinions I particularly care about.

Knowledge

I learned today that my emotional response to being visible depends on the audience to whom I will be visible.

I also learned that I do not habitually get ‘present’ and create a focussed and undistractable state of mind before writing. I know how to do this, and I know it works when I do it. I am not using the knowledge I already have. I assess that having a reliable habit of getting present each time I intend to write would reduce the likelihood of procrastinating.

As a way to habit stack getting present onto the action of sitting down to write, tomorrow I will add the note “get present” to all my calendar entries blocking out writing time.

Progress

Today I met my minimum participation standard for my ‘100 days being visible’ project by writing my blog post. I have taken a small step, and while I would have liked to take a bigger one, I declare my satisfaction with the day.
