Day 14–100 Days Being Visible

Why would I expect others to have the conversations I avoid?

I almost avoided speaking today with someone (let’s call them John) with whom I ended up having an engaged and delightful conversation. I had put off talking to John for over a week, though during the week, I had not seen I was putting off the conversation. I can now see that my desire to fly under the radar had won out over seeking the human connection.

I had tried a habitual (though ineffective) method to influence other people to have the conversation I was avoiding. This method is to complain about a situation to someone I hope will have the conversation I know I ought to have. Why I think other people will intuit that I am asking them to have such discussions I don’t know, especially when they would have to overcome their own discomfort about having potentially tricky conversations.

This situation is all the more ironical because my complaint has been about someone else again who has not been speaking with John when in my opinion, they ought to have. In my reality, it seems it is okay I avoid ‘being visible’ but not okay that other people do so.

Knowledge

I am learning from reflecting on the lead-up to today’s conversation with John it would be helpful for me to have more empathy for other people who also desire to fly under the radar. It would also be beneficial if I took more responsibility for having the conversations I say are important rather than hoping other people will have them. If I am not willing to have a conversation, why expect someone else to have it in my stead? If I am not willing to lead with my own actions, why expect others in an organisation to lead and change the culture?

Progress

I have identified patterns of behaviour that are not consistent with my values and lead me to avoid being visible and responsible. I have had a conversation I could easily have avoided and experienced the benefits of so doing. I am learning to love making tiny increments in my progress.
