Day 1 of My NaNoWriMo Torture Journey
Because 2020 hasn’t been quite cruel enough, I will face the blank page every day for the next month.
It is the waning hours of November 1 where I live, so this post qualifies for the first article on the first day of the month. Today, for reasons I’ll explore in coming articles, I decided to join the thousands of masochists across the known world and challenge myself to complete a novel in 30 days.
I know I can do it; I’ve done it before, but not when my confidence and energy has been at such a low ebb. However, today I sat down and scratched out over two thousand words. I’d hardly call it writing, but that’s not the point. I have the beginning of a story. Most of the words were outlines of an idea, which by the end of the session led to a plot.
I intend to document this exercise in daily posts, not to enlighten you on the finer points of writing, but more likely to reveal more about myself. In the end, that’s what writing does, especially when you do it daily.
One of the casualties of the pandemic is a loss of productivity and it hit my daily writing practice with a mighty wallop. My intention in joining NaNoWriMo, or whatever it’s called, is to get back my discipline and bring to life my cozy mystery series, after being inspired to greater heights in the genre by Louise Penny’s wonderful books.
As the start of daylight savings time today has ravaged my energy, it’s too late for me to write anything more coherent. I’ll end here with the satisfaction that I’ve started the month on Medium with a published piece and hopes for a better articulation of my experience tomorrow.
Here’s hoping the brilliant moon outside shines a light filled with inspiration and good luck on you all tonight. And if the idea of attempting something difficult or completing a novel, I invite you to join me in NaNoWriMo. Let me know in the comments if you care to come along. We have nothing to fear but ourselves.
