Curated, Stats, and More: My First Month on Medium

As an inexperienced writer with no followers

You may have seen YouTube videos or other Medium articles in which people show off how well they did. I always wondered how that would turn out for me. I have no experience in writing and the only social media that I have is LinkedIn. I wanted to share this experience as I think this is much more relatable than some influencer with 100k+ followers.

I wanted to write about software development but never really knew where to start. I had to convince my self to just start writing. About a month ago I decided not to go to bed until I had written a story. I slept late, but it was worth it!

Needless to say, I was very excited when the first views came in. My first post didn’t get much attention, but knowing that 20 people took the time to read my story gave me a lot of energy.

Stats

So, how did it go?

Here is the stats page of my first 30 days on Medium.

I have been refreshing this stats page for at least a dozen times per day. I know, I should probably stop doing that.

The first two stories I wrote only got a couple of views. I wasn’t expected much more to be honest. I had just started writing and didn’t have any followers on Medium.

I was really surprised that my third story got curated by Medium. My goal was to get a hundred views, it got more than two thousand. Getting accepted in a big publication helped out a lot. I am not sure if my story would have been curated otherwise.

I never expected that I would be able to make money in my first month on Medium. But, it turns out that I was wrong. I made $31,76 in the last 30 days. Almost 90% of my earnings came from this story:

This story made $28.35 so far and it's still making about a dollar every day.

I am curious how much views my latest story is going to get. I published it a couple of days ago and it's doing well so far.

Here are some more stats from my first month.

  • From 0 to 36 followers
  • 2 stories got curated
  • 1 story was published in a publication with 130k+ followers
  • 1 story was published in a publication with 40k+ followers
  • 2 stories were published in a publication with 1k+ followers

What I have learned

  • Publish stories in publications. It might take some time to find the correct publication but it is definitely worth it.
  • Quality of quantity. You don’t need to publish an article every week. Stories that are curated will remain visible for much longer.
  • Use Grammarly and the Hemingway App to improve your writing.
  • Read the curation guidelines before publishing your first story.
  • Read your stories a couple of times before posting them.
  • Writing is more fun than I expected.

So, what will I do with the money that I made?

I will probably become a Medium member. I started reading a lot more since I started writing and would love to give something back to other content creators.
