Crumble’n’Custard from Heaven
Poetry prompt: Heavenly duo — a craving twittle

Apple crumble and vanilla custard
sweet, tart; thick, creamy
must resist the urge to gobble
savor the flavor; divine, dreamy
Apple crumble is a golden oldie. One of those old-fashioned desserts that grandma made — and great-grandma before her — and great-great-gr…. — you get the idea! But it only works if it has a good healthy (as in quantity — who cares about the calories?!) side-serve of rich, creamy custard.
Apple crumble and vanilla custard is what I call a heavenly duo. And I’m not the only one who thinks that. Guys, in particular, go weak at the knees over it. It’s the combination of the apple’s sweet-tart duality and the crumble’s buttery-starchy wholesomeness together with the custard’s silky, smooth texture that makes the duo so irresistible to the taste buds and guarantees you a one-way ticket to seventh heaven.
Some like to jazz up the dish by adding spices to the apple and/or crumble elements; others opt for a fruit combo — apple’n’rhubarb, apple’n’pear, apple’n’peach, apple’n’apricot are a few of the popular alternatives. The custard is the constant. Don’t mess with the custard! Vanilla. Thick. Creamy. Smooth as a baby’s behind!
For me, it’s the simple, classic, ‘no frills’ version that is the real winner. Here’s Jamie Oliver’s recipe for a basic apple crumble.
And here’s his recipe for vanilla custard. (Hint, if time/culinary skills are in short supply, packet mix custard or store-bought custard is a good back-up)
Thank you to Rochelle Silva for tagging me in this prompt. Here is her mouth-watering offering
And of course, let’s not forget the indomitable Lucy The Eggcademic (she/her) for dreaming up the Heavenly Duo food poetry prompt at The Brain is a Noodle and for publishing my little foray into food heaven.
A twittle, by the way, is a 100-letter, 4-line micropoem. Here’s another craving twittle I wrote recently.
