Correction Centers Are Charging Inmates Skyrocketing Prices For Healthy Foods
The price gouging for inmates is disconcerting
I keep in touch with an inmate, and we were chatting about how the healthier food the correction centers provide is exceedingly more expensive than the unhealthy foods. And items available for purchase are already unnaturally inflated in the penal system.
Why are correction centers overcharging for healthy foods in an environment where inmates’ health is already a detrimental issue?
- A tuna pack in the outside world costs $1 or less. A correction center charges $3.50.
- A chicken pack in the outside world costs $1 or less. A correction center charges $5.00.
What can we do about this? It’s not fair. It’s not right. It’s not equitable in any sense. Prisoners are still human beings, no matter what they have or haven’t done. They need not only healthy foods that are cost-friendly but proper healthcare, dental care, and mental health care.
