They really work wonder

In January this year, I started publishing articles on Medium. What has happened since then is incredible.

My goal was to earn a few hundred dollars a month. Yes, my main motivation was to make money. I admit that. I was a broke student after all.

After I realized that I could actually make money on Medium I quantified my goal: $500 per month.

I had no clue how long it would take me to get there, but I was determined to make it happen.

Fast forward 5 months and I have earned ten times that amount in one month. On Medium alone. Here is the proof.

This article is for anyone who is at a similar point as I was 5 months ago.

I think the following five principles allowed me to achieve what I achieved. I also think that they can help anyone make good money on medium.

I don’t want to show off with these numbers, but inspire and motivate. Personally, I was motivated by articles from other writers in which they reported their monthly earnings in the high four-digit or even five-digit range because they showed me what is possible.

If you still want to be envious because you earn less, that’s your business.

Get bitter or get better.

1. Consistency Is King

As with most things in life, consistency also pays off as a writer on Medium.

Whenever I haven’t published anything for a few days, my views, reads, and earnings have dropped tremendously a few days later.

Conversely, long streaks during which I published several articles every day resulted in my most profitable days.

2. Three Hours Of Deep Work A Day Is All You Need

Deep work or working in flow is incredibly powerful as I have learned.

This is something Tim Denning, most of you will know him, often writes about. The MVP of this platform is a big believer in deep work.

Full focus and a kind of flow allow you to achieve an incredible amount in a few hours, which would have taken you twice as long with half-ass work.

The following measures help me get into a flow while writing:

  • I drink an espresso. This puts both my body and my head into work mode. It’s like a signal that tells me: now it’s time to work.
  • I eliminate all distractions. I put my phone away and put it on silent. I close all unnecessary tabs on my laptop and remove all unnecessary things from my desk. Less distraction= more focus.
  • While writing I listen to music without lyrics. This also helps my concentration. On Spotify, you can find suitable music by simply searching for “concentration” or “study”.
  • I get over myself and get the first few hundred words done. On the other side, the flow state usually waiting for me.

3. Tap Into The Basic Human Desires

In his incredibly powerful business book “The Personal MBA”, Josh Kaufman states that the more an offer addresses the core human drives, the more attractive it is to customers. I am sure that the same applies to your articles as a writer.

These drives are:

  • The drive to acquire. Almost all of us want to obtain physical objects, money, status, power, and influence. Therefore, people should want to read articles that tell them how to become wealthy, famous, powerful or influential.
  • The drive to bond. Relationships are a key element of our lives. We all want to be loved, platonically and romantically. Articles that promise your readers to become more attractive or likable should therefore do quite well.
  • The drive to learn. We want to satisfy our curiosity. You might want to use this one by providing your readers with useful knowledge.
  • The drive to defend. We are programmed to protect ourselves, our health, our family, our friends, our possessions, and so on. By addressing these drives, your article will be interesting.
  • The drive to feel. We all want to have emotional experiences like pleasure, excitement or entertainment. You could use this, for example, by making your articles particularly funny or exciting.

4. As A Writer, You Have To Be A Reader

Reading is incredibly powerful.

Authors spend months and years writing a book, and you can consume all the experience and knowledge of many of the world’s most successful and smartest people, most of which they have accumulated over a lifetime, in a few hours.

For writing, reading helps me in two ways:

  • I learn a lot of new stuff that I can work into my articles.
  • I refine my own writing style by reading the works of various well-known authors.

5. Double Down On What Works

Medium gives you great feedback with the statistics. Use it and you will increase your earnings. When you have published 20 or 30 articles, you will be able to see which topics and writing styles attract readers and which do not.

Try many different things and do more of what works.
