Spinning stories by the sea wall.

From the time we moved to Holderness, I was captivated by the way things were constantly changing and never quite as they seemed — a perfect ambience for spinning stories — a village the wrong way round, a lighthouse in the middle of town, a turn in a road that goes from a picture-postcard village centre to acres of a modern gas terminal with barbed wire, armed guards, and circling helicopters. The ambiguities, contrasts, and contradictions make it fertile ground for mulling over the twists and turns of mystery novels.

A significant and constant cause of change is coastal erosion. This plaque on the sea wall commemorates just one of an estimated 32 villages lost to the sea since Roman times.
