Companion

My best friend

When you look into my eyes My heart melts like Frost upon the vine. I feel such warmth.

You sit there looking up at me Cocking your head to the side With that questioning look As if you don’t understand.

“Let’s go!” You seem to say. And if I don’t respond You nudge me with your cold, wet nose And lick the back of my hand.

Other times You lie upon the rug Your chin upon your paws Content just to be near.

“Man’s best friend?” Of course you are! Who else would wait all day For my late return Not knowing when?

Then meet me at the door with such explosive love I barely make it in As you wag your tail so enthusiastically That your entire body twitches with it.

I grab the leash and off we go To the park where you delight In sniffing every tree and bush Then watering all of them.

You are the very definition Of unconditional love You personify it every day in every way. No love is greater than yours.

I only hope that I can be The person you think I am. You are the perfect companion For a lonely old man like me.

I peer at the mirror Trying to see What you see As your brown eyes gaze up at me.
