College is Nowhere Near as Important as You May Think
It is only the start of the journey.
I know how you college students may feel. Your degree is so important and the only thing that matters. I wish I realized how wrong this thinking was at the time.
I don’t mean to rain on your parade, but your college degree is nowhere near as important as you think.
I was so tunnel-visioned on securing this laminated piece of paper. It was the only thing that mattered to me at that stage of my life. Well, that and 5 nights out a week and playing for the football team.
But still, for 3 years I basically neglected the people that really mattered and made myself so stressed about the outcome that I didn't enjoy my college experience to the fullest.
The pressure I put on myself was unreal. In my mind, this was all that mattered and would determine the outcome of my life. This is complete garbage.
Many people who don't go down this route or drop out of college end up going on to do great things. They often have to overcome more adversity and take an unconventional path that makes them do more than most degree holders.
College does serve a purpose. But for most who do academic degrees, we end up learning how to become an employee. It sets us up for a mid-level career that involves a comfortable, soul-destroying existence.
Those undertaking a more practical degree like medicine or architecture are in the right place. They are learning key skills and information that can be directly applied on the job.
Both those on pointless theory-based courses can’t apply much of what they learned in the real world.
College doesn’t teach you all the important skills that you will need in the corporate world.
Talking BS & Ass Kissing are key elements of any thriving corporate career. Where were these modules in my prestigious business degree?
College is only the start of the journey. The hard work really starts once you join a company and have to play the petty politics.
I don’t think all degrees should be outlawed. But there needs to be a lot more transparency so students actually know what they are getting themselves into.
If you know that a degree will help you get a decent paid stable job and that is exactly what you want to achieve in life, then great!
But for those that expected more and thought a college degree could answer all their problems, you are likely to be left disappointed.
It would be good to know in advance what we are getting ourselves into and how little in the grand scheme of things it really matters. Being consciously aware of this will allow you to enjoy the journey so much more.
