Summary

Jupiter Grant reflects on the impact of an 80s Wham! t-shirt slogan, "Choose Life," and decides to embrace its message as a personal mantra for making important life choices.

Abstract

In a nostalgic piece, Jupiter Grant recalls the vibrant influence of George and Andrew from Wham!, particularly the iconic "Choose Life" t-shirts they wore during their youthful days. The author reminisces about the era of catchy songs and bold fashion statements, which included slogan tees with messages like "Frankie Say Relax." Despite the absurdity of taking advice from clothing, Grant has consciously chosen to adopt the "Choose Life" maxim as a guiding principle, especially in the past year. The article is part of a daily poetry prompt challenge, with the current prompt inviting participants to write about significant life choices they have made or wish to make in the future. Grant extends this prompt to other writers and friends, inviting them to engage with the theme and share their own perspectives.

“Choose Life,” Said the T-Shirt

I’ve decided to take its advice

I was a kid of ten years old when George and Andrew danced in colours bright (and shorts too tight!) and sang a jaunty song ‘bout jitterbugs and “wake me up”s, of “yo-yos” and of “go-go”s, while I turned up the TV and then danced and sang along.

As well as vibrant pullovers, the boys from Wham! wore tees of baggy white that said “Choose Life” on their fronts and on their backs. Around this time there was a fad for t-shirts just like these; the chatty types doling out advice like “Frankie Say Relax”!

Though it’s absurd to take the words of a slogan on a shirt and use them as a maxim to recite in times of strife, decided I this year gone by to heed the aphorism once taught to me by an 80s tee that told me to “choose life”.
