Artificial Intelligence

ChatGPT and the future of AI

Probably all of you have heard recently about ChatGPT and its unbelievable skills. But is not necessarily better than all other AI apps, as different AI applications serve different purposes and have different strengths. ChatGPT has become widely popular due to its advanced language generation capabilities and its ability to perform many language-related tasks. The AI excels in text generation, language translation, and answering questions. It has been trained on a large corpus of texts from the internet and can produce highly convincing and human-like responses to questions or prompts. However, it is still an AI model and not capable of truly understanding the nuances of human language, emotion, and intention in the same way that a human can.

Why was built?

OpenAI developed ChatGPT as part of its mission to ensure that artificial general intelligence (AGI) will be developed faster. By creating large, powerful language models like ChatGPT, OpenAI aims to advance natural language processing and enable new use cases in conversational AI. Ultimately, the goal is to build safe, beneficial AI systems that will help solve some of the world’s most pressing problems and improve people’s lives.

It is important to note that developing a state-of-the-art language model like ChatGPT is a complex and resource-intensive process that requires significant investment in hardware, software, and research talent. (1 billion was received from investments until today) The investment has allowed OpenAI to build one of the largest and let’s say most advanced language models. It was designed to generate human-like responses to questions and perform a variety of language tasks such as text completion, summarization, and translation. The objective of creating ChatGPT was to provide a tool that could help automate and enhance human communication, while also advancing the field of AI research.

Is ChatGPT better than humans?

ChatGPT can outperform humans in terms of speed and accuracy. However, in many other tasks, ChatGPT may still fall short compared to human performance. For example, it may struggle with tasks that require empathy, creativity, or a deep understanding of human emotions and intentions. It also lacks the ability to understand the nuances and context of language in the same way that humans do. The quality of the output generated by ChatGPT will depend on the specific task, the quality of the input it receives, and the limitations of the model itself. Occasionally could produce harmful instructions or biased content. This means that the same biases that exist in the model, can also appear in the answers. A similar AI chatbot called Sparrow (owned by Alphabet) was released in 2022 but kept behind closed doors because it could cause harm and discriminate against different minorities. Also, other AI applications may outperform ChatGPT in other areas such as image recognition, object detection, and speech synthesis, to name a few examples.

Despite being trained on a large corpus of text data still lacks common sense knowledge and emotional intelligence. This can result in responses that are inappropriate or insensitive. But it has the potential to automate certain tasks that were previously performed by humans. In some cases, this may result in job displacement or a shift in the types of tasks that humans are responsible for. However, it is also important to note that AI can also create new job opportunities and improve efficiency in many industries, leading to overall job growth. Additionally, in the case of ChatGPT specifically, it is likely to have the greatest impact in industries that rely heavily on language-related tasks, such as customer service, journalism, and content creation.

What AI Future beholds?

Nevertheless, ChatGPT cannot replace human judgment and decision-making in all situations, and there will likely still be a need for human workers in these industries. But as AI continues to advance, it will be important that it is developed and used in a responsible and ethical manner. There is a lot that we don’t know and if its use will be attainable and beneficial. Some serious problems should be brought on to the table before we change our perspectives. We need to learn to work with it and not fear it. So, are concerns alarmist or not? Yes, they are. Is our main goal in the near future to ensure that the AI itself is secure against all malicious intentions? For instance, scammers are already trying to figure out how they can benefit from using ChatGPT. But this is the risk we need to assume if we want to advance. Are we ready? No. We will be ready soon? No.

Overall, it is important for governments, businesses, and individuals to proactively prepare for the changes that AI will bring and to ensure that workers are equipped with the skills they need to succeed in the new future paradigm.

PS: Next story here will be with other 30–40 better or complementary AI apps or chatbots.
