Chapter 5: Stupid Sh*t Trump Supporters Say

This is all your fault Mark Zuckerberg

My social media cesspool

It’s no secret that the evil, sadistic, Russian-hackable algorithms that make up Facebook are designed to optimize engagement.

Or as I like to put it: stir up shit.

Every now and then I see other people post photos and stories about their trips to the French Riviera, or their beautiful grandchildren, or the comical antics of their cats, dogs, and hamsters. And those posts are accompanied by so many comments and likes.

If I post a fun, light-hearted meme or photo, I usually get crickets.

But, let me post some provocative commentary about the president, or a critique of the church, and literally, within seconds, I start getting likes; and within a few minutes, the comments start rolling in. I’m not joking. I’ve sat and timed it.

And I know I have only myself to blame. I’ve fed this monster with every complaint and political critique. I’ve trained the Facebook algorithms to ignore MY cute cat video posts or inspirational, Successories memes.

I posted this image to my Facebook feed, just to test my hypothesis. As of this writing, still nothing.

I guess it’s no surprise then that so much of my ire, and really, the fuel for this book, has come out of my frustrations with the dolts and idiots who roam the social media cesspool that is my Facebook feed. I can honestly say, without them, this memoir would not be what it is.

I posted this image less than 10 minutes after the aforementioned Successories “Attitude” image above, then checked back a couple of hours later. The positive and inspirational Successories post: 0. “MAGA Hat made in China” meme: 25 likes, 1 comment, and 3 shares. THANK YOU MARK ZUCKERBERG!

You can’t make this shit up

The following statements you are about to read are 100% real comments told to me by various Trump Supporters. This book is partly dedicated to these, and many others like them, who have lost their Vulcan minds. Thank you for giving me the kick in the ass I needed to tell this story.

And if any of you are reading this and recognize your comment, I hope there are no hard feelings. Consider it like your 15 minutes of fame — albeit anonymous fame. I hope instead of being insulted, you’re proud that you made it into a book. It’s like winning a major award!

And now, the quotes.

Stupid is as stupid does

In response to a discussion I was having with one Trump Supporter, a second TSer chimed in and called me stupid, when the first TSer (the one I was having the discussion with), remarkably referred to me as a nice guy. Mr. Buttinsky then offered this ironic contribution to the conversation:

Good reasonable people continually bend over backwards to accommodate childish, unreasonable, petulant, deceitful behavior and after awhile you have to call it what it is.

Let that sink in. A Trump Supporter described ME like this. Hmmm? Who does this description particularly sound like to you?

Apparently “rape culture” is a myth

Remember all the fun we had on social media during the time when Dr. Christine Blasey Ford had to testify before the Senate during Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court confirmation hearings? You know, the “job interview” for the highest court in the land where BK lost his collective shit in front of the Senate, displaying the judicial prudence and decorum of a spoiled and privileged teenager? Ah, those were good times.

If you recall, Dr. Ford had accused Brett of sexual assault during the summer of 1982 when they were in high school. According to Brett’s supporters, Dr. Ford made the whole thing up, forever changing her life and enduring sheer hell, perhaps ruining her career, all so that she could someday write a book, or some such nonsense. One astute TSer on my feed made this profound sociological observation.

Dr. Ford’s testimony, full of pertinent things she can’t remember and inconsistencies, does not promote RAPE CULTURE. There is no rape culture in America. If a woman on this planet wants to be safe from rape, America is where she would want to be or anywhere with an Anglo-Saxon Christian-Judeo culture and social mores.

There is no rape culture in America? This is the kind of stupid shit privileged white men say all the frakking time. Let’s forget or ignore whatever problems this country does have just because when graded on a curve, we’re not as bad as Saudi Arabia or Somalia. Google the top 10 safest countries for a woman to live, and the U.S. rarely, if ever, even makes the top ten; on the few in which it does, it’s always towards the bottom of that list.

Trump’s Non-racism

This is by far one of my favorite Trump Supporter stupid sayings.

Trump can’t be a racist, he used to pal around with Al Sharpton.

I love it when Trump supporters use a person’s interaction with any person of color as proof of NOT being racist.

Profound Political Commentary

One TSer, while complaining about the kind of laws that Democrats pass and propose vs. the ones conservative Republicans champion wrote this:

In fact, the entire retinue of Democrat laws, both real & imagined, centers on telling people what they must, or must not do.

Hmmm? Last time I checked, ALL laws do this.

Oh, and I would be remiss if I did not include at least ONE of the MANY comments I’ve received from WHITE conservatives (usually from the south) about the idiocy and foolhardiness of black people to follow the Democratic agenda:

Blacks are waking up to the realization they have been lied to by Democrats in huge numbers.

Few things are more humorous than Trump Supporters commenting on other people believing lies.

A Trump Supporting Woman

This next statement was in response to my question to a white (naturally), Christian (of course), woman (sadly) who is a vehement supporter of Trump. I asked her how she, a woman, could support such an openly misogynistic person as Trump. This was her response, verbatim:

I do not give Trump a pass on his treatment of women. However, he has never been accused of rape.

Well, that right there is technically untrue. His first wife actually did (although she later re-characterized it as something else.) Anyway, she continued…

The majority of his romps were consensual and therefore, not an issue. I think pretty much every high-powered man in office, in some shape or form, has treated women like objects. I can’t tell you the amount of time I spent as a Certified Legal Videographer getting patted or swatted on the bottom. I was always confused for being a court reporter instead of the videographer too. Attorneys were always making comments to me and/or asking me out knowing full well I was married. It didn’t make me mad or hinder my career, but it was irritating after a while. But, that really is just the nature of male to female relationships and anyone who says it isn’t is kidding themselves. Those events didn’t make any of those men less capable of doing their jobs, nor did it make those men evil or incompetent in any other sense. So, just because a man can act, what people now see as inappropriate, doesn’t mean he can’t perform his job well. Hell, I was even hit on by my old dentist, but I still let him fix the cavity in my tooth.

Apparently, the blatant workplace sexism displayed in AMC’s “Madmen” is still alive and well in the legal halls (and dental offices) of the 21st century. Image from “Madmen” © AMC

I swear. You can’t make this stuff up. She first said she didn’t give Trump a pass—she then spent an entire paragraph doing just that. Her outlook and complicity with the white, patriarchal society were no doubt shaped by treatment over the years. I didn’t know whether to be pissed at her or feel sorry for her. She then brought it all home…

Nobody is saying Trump is perfect or a Saint. He is far from that, but he does know business and finances and how to make great deals, and he has proved that he loves this country. THAT is why we support him and why he will be elected again in 2020.

Dear Lord. Heaven help us if this man is elected again in 2020.

[If you’re reading this after 2020, and he was re-elected, chances are you’re reading this in some sort of clandestine, underground, resistance headquarters as I’m sure this and many other works of literature about rebellion and fighting injustice have probably been banned, and the U.S. is on the verge of becoming a full-blown Gilead. If you’re reading this after 2020 and he wasn’t re-elected, I hope by God it was because of this book.]

I joke about the social media mayhem which is my Facebook feed. But I can honestly say, I’ve had real heartbreak and loss because of what I learned about people on Facebook. And one loss, in particular, was especially heartbreaking. You know that feeling you get in the pit of your stomach when you realize that one of your good friends is a TRUMP SUPPORTER?
