Cat and Mouse
A short story

She was in a corner now. Literally. With no way out this time. Standing frozen in this dark place with the sound of her heart pounding in her ears, her eyes darting continually in every direction trying to seek an escape route. She could barely see a few inches in front of her, but she knew that her relentless stalker was nearby. She could hear the sound of soft breathing and padded footsteps as he hunted her down and knew that in a matter of moments he would be standing in front of her again.
Just like last time.
But this time she had no strength left to fight any more. Dried blood was on her nose and her head ached. She was too tired to even cry out. Her instincts told her death was inevitable, even when the adrenaline pumping through her veins was screaming, “move!” to her bruised and weary limbs. All she wanted to do was find a peaceful sanctuary somewhere, a safe place where she could rest for a while. Closing her eyes wearily, she thought back on her childhood, the time in her life when she was happiest. Surrounded by her many sisters and brothers and spoiled lovingly by her mother, she had never known worry or fear.
Now she was in the city. This noisy, crowded metropolis where one could disappear in broad daylight, or so she had heard. And all of her friends had deserted her during the attack, leaving her alone to face this stalking menace. She should have been more aware of her surroundings, she realized weakly as her eyes closed and she lost consciousness.
“Are you okay? What’s wrong?” The sound of the little girl screaming in the bedroom brought her mother running to the door. The daughter looked up, tears overflowing. “Look, mommy! Kitty killed a mouse.”
