This piece of flash fiction is called a drabble — exactly 100 words.

The gnome dragged the baby satyr up the banquet hall, past long tables of fairytale creatures, until he reached the head table.

“Goodness, Monty.” The Fairy Queen dabbed her dainty mouth. “We’re eating.”

“You know who’s not eating?” Monty glowered. “Me! This thief ate ALL my watermelons.”

The Queen sighed. “Trial by jury?”

“Yes, please!” Monty bowed.

The Queen stood. “Leave if you served last year.”

Half the room emptied.

“Also, if you aren’t cloven-hoofed.”

Another third gone.

“And if you’re less than half-human.”

Then only the gnome and satyr remained and the Queen’s lips danced in victory.
