A canonical link is a way to tell the search engine crawl that this article is originally published here.

If you have a blog then you could first publish an article on Medium and then after 48-hours, republish it on your blog by adding a canonical link. I have a blog and most of the articles there are originally published there, but if I add another story from my Medium articles then it will be displayed on the recommended section of my blog, the reader can access it but it will not be ranked on Google search or any search engine.
