Tip Of The Day — Day 4 — A Series Of Tips For Writers
This is part of a series of daily tips for writers which is published to share ideas and suggestions on our craft. Everyone will have different advice on how to write, so the tip below is just a personal selection which I hope you will find useful, and do share any of your own in the comments. I hope you find it useful.
Be sure to have access to a good dictionary and thesaurus. These could be books, though of course, most people seem to use online reference books as part of these days. These are invaluable resources for any author, enabling us to look up the meaning of new words, and equally important, to find synonyms) (words with the same meaning) and antonyms (opposites.
Of course, there are many other useful tools, so authors might also make use of resources with lists of good similes, metaphors, books of quotations, or sayings such as proverbs.
Having a wide range of tools at our disposal improves our semantic choice, helps us avoid repetition of the same word if we look up synonyms, can help us pick words for good alliteration, and helps us use the right word in the right place.
