Hint: It is simpler than you imagine

The next iPhone is around the corner and you are probably excited about it, but you are probably preparing to cry over your wallet when it comes out as usual.

I have been using the most up to date iPhones for the last 3 years and I have been upgrading without losing my money on any of them, and you should be doing the same as well.

Read here about my story getting the iPhone 12 Pro Max £500 cheaper than its retail price:

If you are reading this, you are probably one of the few geeks who have been going through the new iPhone rumours and getting hyped about it. You care about your Tech gadgets enough to reach Medium and follow the Tech publications. And in case you wondering, compared to the “normal” population, We are a few.

So let’s start by the first step…

Sell your current iPhone now!

You are probably holding this year or last year’s iPhone. The first thing you need to do is to put your phone on eBay and Facebook Marketplace. Why now? because it is the best time to sell it. Most of the people you do not know only care about is the fact that this iPhone is the newest — till now. They hardly even know when the next one is coming out and even if, they don’t really care. But once the new iPhone comes out, your current one will sharply devalue, If you still hold it.

But the next iPhone is not out yet, what would I use?

Find a spare phone lying around and stick your sim in it. go retro for a change, or maybe re-explore you old phones. There is always a spare phone somewhere, don’t make this an excuse.

Do not Pre-order straight away

Chances are you will be probably watching Apple’s Keynote and getting hyped about the new iPhone and preparing to click that pre-order button.

Well, Don’t!

Wait till it is released, Lot’s of hungry fans will start buying, people will start upgrading their contracts as well. A month later, You will see a lot of “Sealed latest iPhone” ads on eBay and other Marketplace websites. They will usually sell for £100–£200 Cheaper than the retail price. This is when you buy.

…and then repeat next year.

Doing this I always manage to get my hands on the new iPhone either without losing money when selling my phone, or worst case £100 loss. not bad, hah?

Do you want even a better deal?

But this will involve one planned vacation to any of the cheap tourist countries, Try Egypt, Morocco or Southeast Asia. iPhones in these countries usually retail for much higher — due to insane taxes- and this means used market also will get you more bucks than you would expect. Being a frequent traveller to one of these countries, I have tried this several times and it works like charm!

What about buying the phone on contract?

Network providers charge you hell a lot for your brand new handset, they bind you to a 24–36 months contract and by the time your contract is up, your phone would only fit in the recycling bin; 36 months is light-years in the tech world. The only reason you would have to buy a phone from a network provider on a contract is that you don’t have the money to buy it upfront. And If you don’t, you really shouldn’t be wasting your precious money on it.

I think being an Apple fan have its consequences on our wallets, but I think we should be able to lessen that burden by playing our cards smart as well.

Hope it helps…
