Bullies, Resilience, and Sweet Victory: A Journey of Triumph

In the challenging world of middle school in the mid-1980s, I faced a daunting double-edged sword: the torment of boys engaging in sexual bullying, and the cruelty of two girls who took pleasure in making my life miserable. But worry not, my dear reader, for this story takes a delightful turn.
Let me introduce you to Sonya and Darlene, the inseparable duo who made it their mission to tease and taunt me. Despite my towering height of five feet eight inches, I stood taller than both of them, as one measured four inches shorter and the other two inches shorter. Sonya, with her stocky build, light brown skin, and flowing dark hair, exuded confidence. On the other hand, Darlene possessed a fair complexion and a slender frame, complemented by medium-length dark locks.
Their friendship seemed unbreakable as they shared secrets and giggled together, leaving me on the fringes of their world. With my noticeable height and glasses, I became an easy target for their mockery. To make matters worse, they even joined in the laughter when the boys subjected me to relentless advances, occasionally adding their own taunts.
This all started in Grade 7, and though I couldn’t identify its precise origin, what upset me the most was their arrogant demeanor and their appetite for devouring junk food, especially potato chips, while traversing the school halls.
But fear not, for this tale does not end in despair. This story is about endurance and the ultimate victory. Embark on this journey with me to uncover how I discovered the power to conquer the torment and eventually prevail over my oppressors.
Throughout Grade 8, their relentless torment continued. Being in the same homeroom, as well as sharing classes like Home Economics and learning about the Stock Market, I couldn’t escape their presence. Despite my best efforts to avoid them, circumstances often forced me into their sphere. During this time, I faced bullying from Darlene and Sonya, as well as enduring the sexual harassment from the boys.
I recall an incident at my locker when a boy touched my butt. Summoning all my courage, I spoke up and asked him not to touch me. Instead of respecting my boundaries, he made fun of my voice with subtle and irritating tones. To my dismay, Darlene and Sonya, standing nearby at their shared locker, witnessed the incident and joined in the mockery, impersonating me.
In Home Economics class, where we spent an entire year together, I found myself stuck with them. No one else desired to be my partner. I can’t remember the dishes we cooked or the conversations we had, but I do recall when they challenged me to wash the dishes without my glasses. Reluctantly, I accepted their challenge, becoming a source of amusement as they laughed at my struggles — a scene that became all too familiar.
Another time, I received an unexpected phone call at home, a rarity in the pre-cell phone era. It puzzled me to hear the voices of Sonya and Darlene, as I wondered how they got my number. Giggling on the other end of the line, they probed into my personal life, seeking amusement at my expense.
Throughout that entire school year, their taunts seemed to have no apparent reason. Looking back now, I realize that jealousy may have fueled their actions. Despite the hardships they imposed on me, I refused to let their cruelty define me.
At the start of Grade 9, a remarkable turn of events unfolded, revealing a satisfying twist in my story with Sonya and Darlene. Through some mysterious source, I discovered that both girls had failed Grade 8 and were held back to repeat the year. The news washed over me like a delightful wave of triumph.
As I absorbed this unexpected revelation, a surge of satisfaction filled my being. The tables had turned, and the once relentless tormentors had now become victims of their own academic shortcomings. To me, this was the poetic outcome I couldn’t help but savor.
During their initial attempt at Grade 8, they didn’t prioritize academics. Instead, their attention revolved around their personal lives, boys, and teasing me. Armed with this newfound knowledge, my confidence flourished, and I embarked on a personal odyssey, leaving behind the memories of their bullying and focusing on my individual development and accomplishments. Witnessing Sonya and Darlene repeat Grade 8 served as a reminder that resilience and perseverance eventually prevail.
Although I harbored no resentment towards them, a sense of poetic justice provided me with closure. A victorious moment unfolded as I embraced the fact that I indeed had the last laugh.
This experience taught me the power of resilience, the importance of staying true to myself, and the satisfaction that comes from witnessing the natural consequences of one’s actions. It served as a reminder that life possesses a natural balance, granting closure and empowerment.
As I reflect on my journey, I can’t help but appreciate how far I’ve come since those challenging middle school days. The memory of Sonya and Darlene’s academic setback stands as a testament to the strength and resilience that reside within me.
In the end, I emerged victorious, not through revenge or retaliation, but by staying true to myself and embracing the opportunities that lay ahead. This chapter of my life marked a turning point, allowing me to rise above the negativity and find solace in my personal growth and accomplishments.
And so, with a heart full of gratitude and a smile of satisfaction, I bid farewell to the ghosts of the past, knowing that I had indeed secured the last laugh in the most unexpected and gratifying way possible.
