Breaking Through

Poem

I stand tall, unyielding, I will not break, I am ancient, the son of stone, I am strength, I am absolute.

I will not let the world wear me down, Cry your tears, shout and blow your top, Your flashing lights do not scare me, I am brave, I am immovable.

I stand so she is safe, the seed nestled within, From the storms that howl, rip, and tear, A world, cruel, cold, careless, She is fragile, she is safe.

I protect her from man and beast, From searing heat and freezing night, I suffer, so she does not, I am selfless, I am home.

But,

She does not care for my suffering, She does not listen, she knows nothing, Tempted by the lies outside, She is young, she is unwise.

I tell her, I warn her, I even scream, STAY SAFE! STAY INSIDE! I lock her door and chain her legs, I am protection, I am right.

She bangs the door and pleads for freedom, No, I will save her from herself, She begs, she screams, she fights, She is angry, she is blind.

I hold for days and many nights, She digs her roots through my veins, She begins to tear me apart, She is relentless, she is determined.

So,

I break, I buckle, I fall apart, She runs out to the light, I see her face the world, She is confident, she is alright.

I see her blossom, I see my mistake, I was lost, I was a prison,

Now,

I am happy, I am proud, She is beauty, she is free.

This poem was inspired by a girl I know. She is one of the sweetest people I've met but her story was a very harsh one. I wanted to dedicate these little lines to her in celebration of her achievements.

We all think we are doing our best to protect the ones we love but sometimes we are the ones that hurt them the most. Love can blind us, and sometimes it leads us to do horrible things. Always consider the feelings of the ones you love.
