A BOOK REVIEW BY K. JOSEPH

Book Review: Theodora Taylor’s ‘Vengeance’ — A Fascinating and Unconventional Read

An open mind is required to understand the angles and logistics of the goings-on in this book.

I am an avid Theodora Taylor (TT) fan. But I was so scared to buy this audible. I could not imagine a storyline like this, ever.

Every server at the roadhouse I work at knows that Vengeance is a package deal. The three enforcers for the Ruthless Reapers don’t just share a job; they share you for one night if you dare to go to one of the rooms upstairs with them. Source: Amazon.com.

But I inhaled and exhaled and purchased it.

I started it on a long weekend because I knew that once I begin a TT novel; I had to end the TT novel; binge-listening as though it is a TV series. Sleep comes second to eating her words, grabbed in chunks between audible chapters when my eyelids just won’t stay open.

And Vengeance was no different. As with most if not all, TT books, the women and men in the story are completely human and royally flawed, if not psychologically damaged.

It was not as scary as I thought it would be. The story was quite different, not plausible (in my experience or imagination), but to my relief, not harmful to any woman in the trio’s wake. In full disclosure, one guy was ruthlessly maimed; but it was quick and his character was not central to the story.

There was a rather interesting scene I liked that was also unrelated to the central quad-relationship story. Olivia, the lead doctor in an OB/GYN practice for differently abled women, tried to speak to Snow about how misaligned her ideas were to the spirit of the practice. I’m a change management executive, and what Olivia said about technology and people was spot on. Snow’s clarity on how technology will revolutionize patient interactions was incredibly impressive, and Olivia didn’t understand the potential. On the other hand, Snow was unable to comprehend Olivia’s perspective. This type of disconnect is common in business transformation initiatives. The author represented this challenge very well.

This is where my own alignment with the story got suspended.

My mind always goes to the normality of happily ever-after (HEA), if normalcy could ever be a construct of actual everyday life. I wondered how B2 would handle having three dads. Also, what will be the rules of engagement around naked feedings when children are in the mix? And when the kids need to get ready for school, will AM momma-baths and pre-breakfast sex still take priority? And when Vengeance returns to work, will Snow want to return to doing everything herself? After the wedding, will the sex slow down like most married couples experience? TT’s HEA endings tend to leave me with more questions than answers.

This was not a waste of a credit for me, though. I found the entire story quite fascinating. As well, kudos to the very talented narrators: Clementine Dove and Troy Duran. Their ability to distinguish between all the voices of the main characters was stellar. Their story-telling kept me riveted from beginning to end.

I’m not sure who would benefit from reading this book. Perhaps anyone with an open mind and a curious spirit would find it interesting.

It is for anyone ready to learn about rather non-vanilla sexual encounters. I felt myself metaphorically twisting my head to see the angles and work out the logistics of the goings-on between the three guys and the gal.

🧐 Thanks for reading. I was inspired to get this audible.com title and read the book based on a prompt by Keeley Schroder #8: The most inappropriate sex you’ve had. I lived several most inappropriate experiences vicariously through the characters in this novel.
