Summary

A Black man, Samuel Scott Jr., was arrested by Miami police for stealing his own car after reporting the theft, highlighting issues of systemic racism and police misconduct.

Abstract

Samuel Scott Jr., a Black man, faced arrest by Miami police officers who assumed he was a thief despite being the victim of car theft. After reporting his stolen Jeep Compass, Scott found himself in custody due to racial profiling. The incident underscores the systemic racism prevalent in law enforcement, as the officers involved ignored Scott's pleas of innocence and his appearance matching a vague description of the actual thief. Despite being the one to call for assistance, Scott was subjected to false charges, including leaving the scene of an accident and possession of marijuana, which were later dropped. The Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office intervened, and Scott is now seeking justice through a lawsuit against the city and the officers for unlawful search, false imprisonment, and malicious prosecution.

Opinions

  • The article expresses that the arrest of Mr. Scott was an act of pure racism and a misuse of police authority.
  • The author suggests that the assumption made by the Miami cops, that Mr. Scott was a thief, was unfounded and indicative of a broader issue of systemic racism within law enforcement.
  • The incident is presented as a clear example of disrespect towards Black individuals, questioning the purpose of calling the police if they operate with ill intent and preconceived notions.
  • The article criticizes the Miami police for charging Mr. Scott with additional crimes after their initial error, viewing it as an attempt to justify their wrongful actions.
  • The author supports the dropping of charges against Mr. Scott and his subsequent lawsuit, framing it as a fight against systemic racism and unjust treatment by the police.
  • The piece concludes that the officers involved should be fired for their agenda-driven approach, which is at odds with their duty to protect and serve all members of the community.

Unbelievable, doesn’t this type of behavior by these racist cops ever stop? A man’s car gets stolen, he does the right thing by calling the cops for assistance and the cop becomes the problem arresting the man who called them for stealing his own car.

And some people wonder why so many people of color are calling for defunding the police. This is a perfect example of a rigged law enforcement agency making an assumption that because the caller is Black, therefore he must be a thief of the car. What happened to serve and protect? Why not ask questions before making an assumption without evidence of any wrongdoings?

The Miami New Times reported that Samuel Scott Jr.’s Jeep Compass was stolen outside of his aunt’s house, he later found himself being placed in the backseat of the police car by the officers he called. This is pure racism and insanity.

Apparently, these Miami cops made an assumption and should be made to pay for their wrong assumption. What would have happened if Mr. Scott became annoyed and resisted because he was not guilty of a crime? He may have been shot to death. The Miami cops assumed he was the thief and not the victim. Really? He called them! Where is the logic here?

Mr. Scott told these Miami cops at that time that they had the wrong guy which was seen on the officer’s body-worn camera footage that was obtained by New Times. Why did they choose not to listen to Scott or just ignored him outright?

Mr. Scott dressed in typical casual clothes, pants with a shirt on top of a white T-shirt, and the cops claimed the thief had the same type of clothing which Mr. Scott responded that half of Miami wear similar clothing. What a flimsy excuse?

What is the point of calling these cops when they arrive with ill intent and make assumptions even before assessing the scene, situation, or talking to the people involved?

This is a clear example of no respect for the Black man which is an epidemic in this country. Why would Scott steal his own car? This makes no sense.

On top of this madness, the Miami police having made such a dreadful error in their judgment decided they had to get Scott for something. They charged Scott for leaving the scene of an accident, false reporting of a crime, failure to carry a concealed-weapon license, and possession of marijuana.

Thankfully due to the efforts of the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office, these charges were dropped per the Miami New Times.

While this idiotic arrest happened three years ago, Scott has not forgotten it. He is currently suing the city and the officers for $500,000 for their unlawful search, falsely imprisonment, and maliciously prosecuted him three years ago.

In conclusion, another bad day in the life of a Black man but this one’s life was spared. These cops need to be fired because they had the wrong agenda. They are hired by the people’s taxes to protect and serve all the people. This was pure harassment, and systemic racism in action.
