Summary

Tanya's aggressive determination to secure a Black Friday deal escalates into a confrontation with another shopper, reflecting the intense competition of the sales event.

Abstract

"Black Friday Rage" is a 100-word drabble that captures the frenzied and often chaotic atmosphere of Black Friday shopping. The protagonist, Tanya, is depicted as someone accustomed to getting her way, especially when it comes to shopping on Black Friday. Despite hours of waiting and the physical and emotional toll it takes on her, she is driven by a relentless pursuit to acquire a coveted item. In a fit of desperation, Tanya resorts to ramming her car into another shopper's SUV and confronting the driver, highlighting the darker side of consumerism and the lengths people will go to for a perceived deal. The story concludes abruptly with the arrival of the police, leaving the outcome unresolved. This piece is part of the "100 Story Challenge" by Zane Dickens and serves as a response to the word prompt "PERSEVERANCE" from Crush Hundo Edition.

Opinions

  • The author implies a critique of the extremes of consumer behavior during Black Friday sales.
  • Tanya's actions suggest a sense of entitlement and frustration, possibly reflecting broader societal issues surrounding materialism and competition.
  • The story hints at the irony that the perseverance to obtain material goods can lead to destructive and anti-social behavior.
  • The author uses the word prompt "PERSEVERANCE" in an unconventional way, showcasing its negative manifestations rather than as a positive attribute.
  • The brief mention of the police arriving suggests a call to consider the consequences of such extreme behavior in the pursuit of material possessions.

This drabble (100-word story) is a response to Crush Hundo Edition’s word prompt. Today’s word is PERSEVERANCE.

Tanya was starting to get tired, and she felt more than a little crazy. But she persevered. She’d wasted five hours of her life waiting in line for nothing.

She threw the car into reverse and backed up again. Then she slammed it into drive and smashed into the shiny SUV one more time.

She swung open her car door, stepped out, and started taunting the driver.

“How do you feel now? Are you happy that you got the very last one? Do you feel good about yourself?”

She let out one last desperate scream before the cops rolled in.

This 18th drabble is written as part of the “100 Story Challenge” by @Zane Dickens.
