Biden Presidency Will Be Trumped

Nobody said it was easy No one ever said it would be this hard

Picture from RFI and edited by the author

Joe Biden is the 46th president-elect, and Kamal Harris is the first woman vice president-elect.

After one of the most tormenting elections in the history of America, the people have spoken: The people have chosen opportunity and change. Yet, the former VEEP has barely led the race against his opponent, facing results that reveal quite a lot about what’s genuinely going on in America, a divided America.

Joe Biden will clearly face several challenges as he will get sworn in, or as he calls it healing America, from the pandemic to the economic recession. But, one of the most pain-assy challenges will be to tackle the Trumpism that has been spreading to the entire nation through the stream of propaganda tweets, toxic media and entourage, and other means.

Is Democracy at Stake?

Well, that depends on the resilience of the current administration. The US, as usual, is living some unprecedented events thanks to President Trump, who is clearly refusing to accept the results of the US election. Questioning results is not controversial; however, ignoring them is odd and sort of TOTALITARIAN.

Yet, if democracy is threatened, it’s also because of everything else. The department of justice has been sending warning signs about being compromised. The sound of silence in the senate is disturbing. And even the CIA and the Pentagon are expressing serious concerns about where things are heading.

I know I’ve said it before, but President Trump is displaying real symptoms, and I’m not talking about the coronavirus. Trump is showing symptoms of political despotism, which he had established and consolidated through his first and only legit term. From breaking up with allies while seeking new comradeships to following his agenda as if no elections had occurred. That’s is what charismatic leaders do.

Will America go back to a pre-trump/ pre-Covid-19 era?

It’s early to call it, but in a very electric 2020, the answer would be: No, it is unlikely to go back to normal, at least not right now.

In the middle of a pandemic, the destiny of the nation relies on how Biden and his VP will be dealing with healthcare insurance, rebooting the economy, supporting small businesses, fighting against systemic racism, establishing new strategies for schools reopening, reconciling with international allies, dealing with climate change.

Furthermore, Biden/ Harris will have to deal with a very greedy Trump, just kicked out of the white house. Trump will unquestionably try to sabotage this presidency by shortcutting lines and pressuring the GOP to do their best to fail this presidency. I’d be surprised to see otherwise. So, Biden’s plan to reach out across the aisle and work with republicans doesn’t seem easy. Trump will get personal and make it his mission to drown America to prove America’s wrong choice.

In some way, Biden and Harris will become Avengers to save the nation from itself.

What about Trumpism?

Trumpism might be a new word, but what it implies has been well-rooted in the US for a long time. Trump ignited it only, and to some extent, has made it legit. Does it mean that Joe Biden will be able to do what is necessary to soothe the wound Trumpism has caused? I believe he totally can. Yet, would he be able to heal it? That is not quite up to him.

It comes down to both parties and their commitment to start fresh instead of setting off the same old dividing tricks: blue VS red, democrats VS republicans, Trump’s supporters VS anti-Trumps.

Only the people can build a crust to heal America.

Healing might take some time, especially when a virus is flowing in the bloodstream of America. Accordingly, containing it is extremely tough because, unlike other diseases, viruses don’t have a cure. Preventing viruses is possible, but once they’re in, they’re in. It takes strength to fight them and time to get better as well.

And Trump is highly virulent. HEREBY, eradicating him from the American system isn’t easy, especially with his viral tweets, which are infesting people’s feeds and minds. So, the healing process might be painful, and it’s up to the American immune system to resist to neutralize the virus implanted in the White Cell of America.

Any way to clear up the air?

I think one of the most effective ways to move on would be to silence Trump’s tweet notifications, if not reading them, and move on. His tweets are the most effective way to enhance Trumpism, along with the media, of course. The media have been playing a huge part in spreading Trumpism, whether they supported it or not. So enough with making tweets a national security matter. They’re just tweets!

That leaves the healing process up to GOP and Dems and their resilience to reach out to one another. Biden said it over and over: It’s about all Americans, without regard for who they voted. Perhaps it’s time for the senate and the house to follow the same pattern.

The supreme court justice has to be bold and stand up for the American people as well. If the election officials took days to count all the votes that had been sent before closing the polls, the supreme court justice should not bend to the sitting president; even further, his allegations should not be scot-free either. For once, the 45th president and his entourage have to face the consequences of their groundless accusations. After all, no one is above the law.

The takeaway

The future of Democracy is facing some disturbing challenges, and the stakes are high, especially with an administration that is deliberately resisting the essence of this democracy.

Yet, the vote’s outcome clearly showed a divided nation, and nothing is more dividing than race and the economy. So perhaps, the new president-elect has an opportunity to avoid his predecessor’s mistakes, by not undermining these issues.

People are looking for stability and decency, and that starts with healthcare, education, and job opportunities that will lead to social justice. So regardless of who they voted for, people want to see change and actions that will truly heal the nation. The timing has never been better with the upcoming holidays to move forward.

The Trumpism is here to stay, and perhaps ignoring it is the best way to fight it. It might take time, and only a president showing up for all Americans can substantially overcome division.

As for Trump, I would say thank you for what he has accomplished for America, an overwhelming rawness that triggers self-awareness!
