Bible Study Guide Day 001: Genesis 1–3

God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness.

Genesis 1:4

The Creation of Light by Gustave Doré

Genesis 1

The Beginning

God created the heavens and the Earth. The Earth was formless and empty, covered in darkness. But God’s spirit hovered over the waters.

On the first day, God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. He saw that it was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. This marked the beginning of the first day.

On the second day, God created the sky to separate the waters above from the waters below. He called it “sky” and saw that it was good.

On the third day, God gathered the waters together to form seas and made dry ground appear. He also created all kinds of plants and trees on this day. Again, he saw that it was good.

On the fourth day, God created the sun, moon, and stars to provide light for the Earth. He also set them in place to mark seasons and days. Once again, he saw that it was good.

On the fifth day, God created all living creatures in the sea and birds in the sky. He blessed them and commanded them to be fruitful and multiply. And it was good.

On the sixth day, God created all land animals and saw that it was good. Then, he created human beings in his own image and gave them dominion over all other living creatures on Earth. He blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it” (verse 28). And God saw that it was very good.

Genesis 2

On the seventh day, God rested from all his work. He blessed this day and made it holy, setting an example for us to rest and honor him on the Sabbath.

Adam and Eve

He then planted a garden in the east called Eden and placed the man he had created, Adam, in it. In this garden, God made every kind of tree that was pleasing to the eye and good for food grow.

In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

He also formed a river within the garden to provide water. The river separated into four headwaters: Pishon, Gihon, Tigris, and Euphrates.

God commanded Adam to freely eat from any tree, except for the forbidden tree of knowledge.

Next, God brought every animal to Adam for him to name. But none of them were suitable as a companion for him. So God created Eve from one of Adam’s ribs, and they were united.

Genesis 3

The Fall

The serpent, who was the craftiest of all creatures that God had made, deceived Eve into eating the forbidden fruit from the tree of knowledge. She then gave some to Adam, who also ate it.

Their eyes were opened, and they realized they were naked. They hid from God in shame.

When God confronted them, Adam blamed Eve for giving him the fruit, and Eve blamed the serpent. As punishment for their disobedience, God cursed the serpent to crawl on its belly for all eternity and put enmity between it and humans.

He also pronounced consequences for Adam and Eve, including painful childbirth for women and having to work hard for food from the ground.

Despite their disobedience, God still showed love and grace towards Adam and Eve and made garments of skin for them to cover their nakedness.

They were banished from the Garden of Eden and a cherubim was placed to guard the entrance, preventing them from eating from the tree of life.
