Beware Of The Trap Of A Bargain

Cyber Monday, Black Friday, Boxing & New Year's Days Offers can turn out to be dodgy deals and expensive in the long run

Photo by Ashkan Forouzani on Unsplash

It was Warren Buffett who once advised, ‘Watch what the masses are doing and do the opposite’’. This means when the masses are out there, thinking they are going to get a bargain, you can do exactly the opposite by planning ahead to ensure you get the new year to the right start. How?

There are so many offers and discounts going on at this time of the year, that one might be tempted the offers and discounts are real bargains, and that you are saving money. What are you to look out for to actually know an offer is a bargain?

Return On Investment (ROI)

I will start by looking inward at so many offers here on Medium Platform. There are many coaches and tutors, some charging up to $500 or more to teach you how to master Medium, and become high earning writer on the platform. Yet no one has mastered or knows much about the Medium Algorithm.

They often boast about how they have earned hundreds of thousands every month just by writing on the Platform. While I will not dispute that writers do earn a great deal on the Platform, writing is so unique that I often wonder if writing on the Medium Platform is a teachable skill.

Do not get me wrong, there are various articles from writers here teaching us one skill or the other to increase readership and earn more. These are commendable and useful too. But spending money on what your fellow writers taught about mastering the Platform is entirely not a good return on Investment. This cannot be compared to the useful general writing courses available outside the platform.

Most people I know who took these courses have complained, some openly, about wasting their money when they see that it has not actually added to their income, but rather depleted it.

So, what I am saying, in essence, is that reducing a course fee, or any item is still a waste if it does not help you towards what you want to achieve in the long run.

Spend your money on what is useful to you, not get caught up in the hype of a bargain

Scams Over Scam

The danger of being a victim of these offers is high because most throw caution in pursuit of these offers. Imagine, in the UK alone last year 2020, shoppers spent £4.8 billion out of which £6.98 million was lost to scammers. We need to watch and take care particularly about:

Scams email that contains spam links. These links are usually unsolicited, but they may look like they are genuine enough to make you fall into it.

Pauline Smith, director of Action Fraud, said: “If you think you have found a bargain that is too good to be true, it probably is. Stop and think before making a purchase, as it could protect you and your money.

Always shop with officially established, trustworthy retailers and look for clone websites. You may not notice the difference between amazon.co.uk and amaxon.co.uk

If you do go shopping don’t be dazzled by the offers, said James Padmore, head of money at CompareTheMarket.com. “Buying something you don’t want or need just because it’s cheap is not a bargain. Decide what you want and make a shopping list.”

The Takeaways

  • Consider the environment when shopping, most purchases, especially those that are thought to be a bargain are not really needed and end up in landfills.
  • An average shopper spends £275 on these offers. Invest this amount in an annual pension pot to generate additional income.
