Being Able To Focus Can Become Your Superpower
Focus is not rocket science, I got it back and you can too.
In today’s world, being able to focus on a single task has almost become a superpower. With a lot of distractions around, one of the most difficult tasks is to focus on a single task. And with no surprise, the individuals who can focus for a longer period are the ones who are successful, be it in school, work, or even relationships.
When you connect to the silence within you, that is when you can make sense of the disturbance going on around you. ― Stephen Richards
Multitasking is a myth
Our brain is very bad at switching things, Once you switch a task you would realize that you’re constantly thinking about the previous task while working on the current task and what does it result in? None of the two being done on time. Moreover, switching different tasks continuously may drain out your brain. Hence, I decided not to do multitasking and started to focus on a single task while ignoring everything else. And that’s what high achievers also do, they concentrate on a single thing like a laser beam without bothering about other tasks.
Avoid distractions

The most common and most underrated. Has it ever happened to you that you are taking a small break, say about 5 minutes, start scrolling your feeds on Instagram or Facebook, and out of a sudden you check the time and it’s 30 minutes wasted. It used to happen to me a lot. Just think about it, you are wasting 30 minutes and your energy too, on multiple occasions a day on things that you don’t care about. We need to find ways according to our requirements to avoid these distractions, for example, what I do is that I keep my smartphone away from my reach so that the thought of taking a 5-minute rest on seeing the notification on the smartphone doesn’t come into my mind.
Make focus a daily habit

A lot of us just wait for all the planets to align so that they can decide to focus on a task. And that’s not the right way, sometimes you may end up waiting till the deadline. Instead, you can have a time slot fixed for a certain task and at that time you concentrate as long as you can on that particular task ignoring other tasks. That’s what I recently incorporated into my daily life. And that’s where your time management skills also come into play. I schedule my most important tasks in the morning when my mind is fresh or at the end of the day when I don’t have to worry about anything else.
Take care of your body
This is something that is not considered often. You need to take care of your body to mind your functions optimally. Research has shown that 7–8 hours of sleep is necessary for our brain to focus during the day. Exercise is something that should be done regularly too, thanks to the release of dopamine, serotonin, and many other neurotransmitters, your ability to focus on difficult tasks improve. By exercise I don’t necessarily mean hitting the gym, anything that can challenge you physically can be considered as an exercise, even a long walk outside in nature. I always make a to-do plan in the morning in which I never forget to mention at least 30 minutes of exercise.
Use the Pomodoro technique
This technique is highly recommended for beginners. It is a technique in which one divides his or her tasks into subparts and take a small break after each subtask, and a long break after 3–4 such cycles. I still use this technique on days when I don’t feel like working a lot. It helps me accomplish the task and I don’t have to stick to a task for a very long time.
So, those were the ways by which I got my attention back to normal and, am trying to improve my attention span daily. If they can work for me, they can work for you as well, all you need is dedication and you will see the results by yourself.
