Being a Mom is Magical and I am Grateful For This Experience
A dedication to all the mom’s this Mother’s Day

My children are both very precious to me. We have a very tight knit family in general. As we approach Mother’s Day this year, I am reflecting on the gratitude I have for my own mom. She sacrificed a lot in her life to be sure my siblings and I were raised with love and support and given all that we needed to thrive. She taught me, by example, how to be a compassionate and supportive mom. She stopped working when my oldest brother was born and felt it was important to dedicate her life to raising children and caring for the home. I am very grateful for that.
I too chose to stay home with both of my kids until they were school age. I then went back to work part time. I feel blessed that I was able to spend those formative years with them. I will never forget either of my pregnancies, or births. Each have their own unique stories and as I have written before, I truly believe each child is a miracle.
Being a mom is magical and joyful, but also difficult and can be heartbreaking. It is also tiring and can be thankless, but to me there is very little that is so rewarding. When my child experiences illness or heartbreak I feel it too. The balance is that I also feel their joy and their sense of accomplishments. I am not quite sure if all mother’s feel this way. There is a lot that no one tells you and no one can possibly prepare you for. I would not have it any other way. Each age and stage of their life is just as amazing as the last. Now that they are both young adults it is really quite fun. I feel most of my hard work is now finished. I will always be their mom, I will always have worries and concerns, but now I get to sort of sit back and enjoy the young people they have become. I am honored to be their mom. They are truly both amazing individuals with their own unique strengths and personalities.
The Day I Became a Mom
Motherhood is magical
That moment you were born
In your eyes I saw that twinkle
I would protect you forever the words I did warn
I held your tiny body 4 pounds and 7 ounces — so small but mighty
I knew my world had changed in the best of ways
I thanked the Lord almighty
And promised to care for you night and day
Not sure what to name you
It needed to suit your personality
The love we had for you was unbelievably true
The name we chose, Morgan, unwittingly
Nothing else would do
Lover of horses and sea protector
How were we to know
It was unexplained, just felt, as I held you in your splendor
Your future something special, and I would know when I watched you grow
Today, as you are about to graduate
Tears of joy stream down my face
I am beyond proud of you, you are first rate
I can no longer protect you and I must leave it up to fate
Marine Biology here you come, home to the sea
I will visit you often
You are never far from me
Don’t let this world make you hard, soften
When things get difficult, and they will, it will be ok, you will see
Go do what you love
Be who you are
Don’t listen to those who don’t believe in your dreams, rise above
I have always known you will go far
A mother’s bond can never be broken
I will feel you wherever you are
Even without a word spoken
Look up and know we are not so far away under the very same star
I wrote this poem for my first-born daughter, Morgan. She will be graduating from the University of Kentucky on May 6th with honors. It is quite an amazing achievement that she is graduating on time given all of her health setbacks in the last two years. She had to take a semester leave of absence due to unknown illnesses two years ago. To me, she is the face of resilience and the master of determination.
I knew when I held her moments after birth that she was something special. I had no idea that life would present her with such challenges. Of course, I wish I could remove all of those for her. Yet, I know they are creating the unstoppable person she has and is becoming. Look out Florida, this is just the beginning of her mission as a marine biologist. If anyone can improve the quality of the ocean coral reefs, I know it is my girl. For goodness’ sake — it was written in the stars when I chose her name.
Thank you, Sahil Patel, for this lovely prompt, MOTHERHOOD. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I would like to thank all of the hardworking mommas out there who are shaping lives, teaching responsibility, crying silently at night, and doing the best you can. I am dedicating this to all of you. I believe motherhood is a sisterhood. We all need to love and support each other. Hugs to you all and thank you for all you do.
Thank you everyone for stopping by and reading this. I appreciate you so very much. I would be nothing as a writer without you, as my readers. I would greatly appreciate if you would comment and tell me about your mom, lets stay connected.
Peace & Light,
