Be Open (More About Me) — Rhonda Marrone

So, this is me: when I was a little girl I loved to play in the dirt and ride bikes. I could swing on swings all day and pretend I was flying, then jump out and really fly for a few seconds until I hit the ground. That’s probably why my knees have such bad arthritis today.
I could read when I was 3. No one taught me. I just learned because I loved books. I wanted my mom to read to me all the time and I would sit and look at the books when she wasn’t reading to me. I figured it out for myself.
I love animals. I have always had pets and don’t know what I would do without having a cat or dog, preferable a cat. When I was young we lived on a several different farms with horses, cows, chickens, all those things. I milked cows, gathered eggs, gardened. We didn’t have air conditioning or cable TV or any of those luxuries we think we cannot live without today.
Today I am the mother of three adult children: two young men and one young woman. I have two grandsons by my oldest son. I’ve been married and divorced three times. I raised my kids as a single parent.
I have a strong liberal arts and language education: a Bachelor’s in English Writing, with minors in Literature and Spanish, and a Master’s in Humanities. It took me forever to graduate. My first college class was in 1992. I finally graduated with my Master’s in 2018. I didn’t go to school that whole time, of course, there were kids, years of no school, and jobs.
My favorite job was not really a job: I was an AmeriCorps VISTA for 2.5 years. I volunteered in the area of addiction and extreme poverty. I used my education to tell the stories of people who were recovering from addiction to spread hope where there previously was none.
Trauma has been a part of my life since I was very young. PTSD has been part of my daily life since elementary school. I have been an expert at survival but not always an expert at living. Writing, especially writing poetry, gives me a way to live, to say what I cannot find a way to say out loud.
Be Open Says;
Thank you for taking our Challenge, Rhonda! :-)
