Be Open (More About me) — Demi Mason
25 years young | Seen some places | Done some things

Hello!
Happy *whatever day of the week it is* to you.
Welcome to a written intro about me. I much prefer writing about my thoughts, but I’m going to give it my best shot. I’ll keep it short and sweet.
Hi, I’m Demi.
I was born and raised in sunny South Africa. My adolescence was spent growing up in a small fishing community just south of Durban (central). A town that thrived off of ‘village’ culture. Greeting each other, attending the same schools, supporting small businesses and, looking out for our locals.
Local is Lekker.
After school, I pursued a creative career and became a Graphic Designer. It’s been a visually stimulating path, filled with fun and games while I navigated the end of my teen years and tip-toed into my twenties. I learned so much about business, the creative industry and developed a sturdy work ethic.
Design with style & a smile.
At 21, I flew to Amsterdam to be closer to my mom and brother. I got a job working with an agency in London and set up a foundation there. With wide eyes and a lot of confidence, I explored this proud and playful concrete jungle. Exposing myself to a part of the world I had not yet encountered.
Tired of London — tired of life.
Taking the freelance route allowed me to have complete control over free time and financials. I aimed for 2 things; to liberate my independence and learn from and experience different parts of the world. Something I was not yet fortunate enough to do. Nor wise enough to know how to balance the two.
Balance is the key to everything.
What I thought was ‘liberating my independence’ was; earning good money. This was a blessing and a curse. Sadly, money became my biggest motivator. It felt powerful but with no real substance. I drove my sturdy work ethic straight onto a workaholic road. Not putting my foot on the break, not wanting to.
More talent, less ego.
Thankfully, I didn’t crash. I told myself that the day I leave a job is the day I stop learning. And while I still had so much to learn — There was no more fresh water to fill my cup. I had to diminish my fears, open my heart, and continued my journey in another direction. Seeking life wisdom and growth.
Change your priorities — change your life.
In an attempt to re-balance, I devoted a lot of energy to aim #2; and went on to see different parts of the world. I learned profound things from ordinary people. I walked through different ways of life and danced along with the cultural shifts. It was magical and it was liberating. It was soul-fulfilling.
Money returns, time doesn’t.
As of recent, I’ve resided in beautiful Berlin. Continuing to learn and grow. Working on balance and filling my own cup as well as the world’s. I’m exploring many avenues of passion and purpose. One being writing. I feel this calling for it — so here I am, answering it.
My intention is to share my experiences, perspective, and the lessons I learn along the way. So, if you like what you see — connect with me :) and, of course, watch out for more of my articles through Be Open.
