Be Open (More About Me) — Bia Root (Rattanaphan Khangwat)

A story about a girl who’s a long way from home

Photo of Author taken by a friend

My British name is Bia Root, nope I don’t have a middle name. You may wonder why I have another name in brackets. Well….that’s my official Thai name. Yes, I have two names! No, I’m not a spy (I wish).

Every Thai citizen has an official name — this is the name on your birth certificate. We use our official name in formal situations such as government documents, school enrollments, job applications, and applying for bank accounts or doctor’s visits. We also have our nickname, this is the name used by our friends and family.

So where does my British name come from? Well, my nickname is Bia, after my mother got remarried to an English guy, with the surname ‘Root’, they made the decision to use ‘Bia Root’ as my British name.

In fact, my brother and I did move to the UK and we used our Thai names for some time during primary school before it got changed. But after a lot of embarrassing moments with people not being able to pronounce our names correctly or at all, and a lot of awkward and uncomfortable stares. I was also in favor of changing the name before secondary school started.

After obtaining my degree, I made a decision to take a break from the UK and fled to Thailand for a year to teach English. It was an amazing experience to be back in my birth country and to be able to exploit my Thai language skills, after having spent many years neglecting my true heritage. I initially had the intention of return after a year, as the year was approaching I wasn’t ready to return.

So I moved to Japan! This is where I’m writing this article. I’m very new to Medium and Be Open. Thank you for accepting me to be a part of Be Open Writers Team. My two months Medium anniversary will be coming up very soon.

I first discovered Medium about a year ago while I was looking for a site to write a blog and learn something new, I found some really interesting articles. I felt extremely intimated by the quality and content, I felt there’s no way I’m able to produce anything of that standard. So I fled!

Here I am, back after a year and writing for almost two months on Medium.

What made me dive in and start to write? The answer is: to express my thoughts and feelings; to grow and learn, and to push myself out of my comfort zone by doing something I can look back on and be proud of.

I hope I will be able to produce some really insightful and amazing content and achieve the feeling I felt by reading others’ articles.

Please do feel free to give me any tips and advice on how to improve. I’m always willing and keen to learn.
