Be Like a Stone To Reach Your Goals
In his book “Siddharta,” Hermann Hesse lets a young Samana say something that could be in any personal growth guide today. Even today, we can learn a lot from these words.
“When you throw a stone into the water, it falls quickly by the fastest route to the bottom of the pond. This is the way it is when Siddhartha has an aim, an intension. Siddhartha does nothing — he waits, he thinks, he fasts — but he passes through the things of the world like the stone through the water, without bestirring himself. He is drawn forward and he lets himself fall. His goal draws himself to it, for he lets nothing enter his mind that interferes with the goal. This is what Siddhartha learned from the shramanas. This is what fools call magic, thinking that it is brought about by demons. Nothing is brought about by demons; demons do not exist. Anyone can do magic, anyone can reach his goals if he can.”
Wow, what a great statement.
I have been inspired by these words over and over again for years.
When it comes to reaching a goal, we always do too much. We row with our arms, run in zigzags, try all kinds of tricks and knacks and work out the most fabulous plans.
But then, in the end, we lose. And if we don’t lose, we reach our goal much later than we could have.
Why is that so? It is because we have not behaved like a stone. When we head for a goal, we look more like a leaf than a rock. If we throw a leaf into the water, it offers resistance due to its surface, and due to its low weight, it sinks only slowly to the bottom.
As it slowly sinks, it tumbles through the water instead of being pulled directly to the bottom. This is because it offers too much surface area for the water to attack and can, therefore, be distracted from the goal.
If we plan too much on our way to the goal, we also offer the world too much to attack. We let things into our heads that have nothing to do with our goals and become distracted.
We take detours and thereby expose ourselves to forces that lead us to even more detours. We are leaves that stagger in the murky water of life towards the bottom without knowing where we will arrive at the bottom.
We lack penetrating power and straightforwardness. The stone has both and sinks unperturbed and without effort directly to the bottom. It is not distracted because it is more massive than the medium through which it moves.
How to become like a stone
For example, if you want to be a writer, then write. Writing gives you the mass that draws you toward your goal. Neglect writing for other activities such as marketing or research, and your power of penetration decreases.
Whatever you need to do besides writing, do it in addition to writing, not instead.
Do not be distracted by sales figures, reviews, daydreams, disappointments, or frustration. A stone in water does not dream. A stone in the water is neither euphoric nor disappointed or frustrated. A stone in water simply sinks.
Be like a stone, and let yourself be pulled towards your goal. Do not fight back and bundle all your strength in only one direction — towards your goal.
