Be + Do = Become

A manifesto in praise of transformation

Isn’t it weird that the more we become productive and progress as a society, the busier we get?

We are constantly connected and doing stuff that we “have to, must, should” do. To impress, to avoid confrontation, to do what we are “supposed to do”. So much to do, so little time.

Is it ever enough?

We put so much time planning work projects and holidays, but we don’t do the same with our biggest project: our lives.

Without clarity of what we want, of what kind of life we want to live, we accept external demands and neglect ourselves.

We feel something is missing. We are tired, depressed, burned out and our lives are lacking meaning. To cope with it all we binge watch Netflix, overdrink, overwork, overeat, oversleep, over-worry, keep busy, and, even worse, we think that this is normal.

That is what I call living on autopilot. Is this really it?

In this fast-paced world, the biggest rebellion we can do is to slow down, reflect, and change our course of action.

So let’s begin this peaceful rebellion.

The key is to trust the feeling that something is missing. To follow it as it leads us on an inner journey.

What are your values?

What do you really want?

How are your values connected to how you are actually living your everyday life?

Given that you are surely going to die, how could you give yourself the gift of a well-spent life?

Here is a crazy thought: the world we live in is our creation. That chair you are sitting on was originally a tree trunk. The dishwasher, electricity, pens and paper. Someone somewhere came up with pretty much everything around us.

The school system, the economic system, office hours, all the same. None of these simply “exist”. Everything comes from a thought, a concept; meaning our lives are based on mental constructs and social conventions.

And guess what? We can keep creating. We don’t need to live based on what is already out there. More than that: what we have created we can transform; we can even destroy and create anew.

It’s time to get out of autopilot.

It’s time to change; it is time to become.

To become is the result of being together with doing. It does not matter how much love we feel inside of our chest if we don’t act from it. It does not matter that we are not happy with our lives if we don't take any steps to change it. Knowing what we want is not enough if we don’t act on it. We need to concretize.

Be + Do = Become

The work is to connect our thoughts, words, and deeds. To synchronize our values with our behaviors; our dreams with our actions.

The practical meaning of this is to become who we truly are. To reconnect to that seed within that we lost along the way.

That is how we can live from a place of alignment. Mind, heart, and body together. As long as we don’t do that, we feel something is missing. We are not fully showing up. Put it simply, what is missing is us.

Through alignment we become ourselves.

Through slowing down we can catch the constructs that are dictating our lives and change our course of action. What we need is to get out of inertia. More than anything, this is a work that takes patience and compassion towards ourselves.

Truth be told, practice makes it perfect. By repeating over and over again we get solid foundations and finally live them.

We are not the fears, the traumas, the confusion, the negative self-talk, the lies, the stories we carry.

These are pieces of armor we picked up along the way.

We took them to protect ourselves, to not have to deal with vulnerability, with risk, with the possibility of being judged and failing. They served a purpose, at some point. But it turns out, they end up clogging our tubes, preventing us from being ourselves. By upper limiting us, they prevent us from living in alignment, from moving forward, and from living bigger lives.

We are talking about taking the lead in our lives. Being the CEO. Empowerment means having the courage, the confidence to be ourselves. Expanding.

To dare to dance, to dare to feel, to dare to speak, because that is what is coming from within. To be sovereign beings, living our lives in accordance with our best interest. Not out of fear, but out of love for ourselves.

Empowerment comes from a place of self-love. We love ourselves so much that how could we possibly oppress ourselves, and not allow ourselves to be?

Empowerment requires self-awareness and self-acceptance. For what kind of love is that which cannot take the truth and work with it?

Empowerment requires us to grow up. Show up. Do the work. Take the responsibility of turning what we want into our reality. To harvest the fruits one must sow the seeds.

Last but not least, we are perfect as we are, and we need to grow.

Both are true. Just one side of the equation is partially true. It won’t cut it.

Balance. Don’t stagnate on either side.

Softness, gentleness. Surround yourself with love and beauty and live from a place of joy.

Yet keep expanding. Have clarity of purpose. Take aligned actions and keep moving forward.

It’s time to slow down. With patience and self-compassion, let's get out of autopilot.
