Baseball Is Safer At Home

But don’t tell the commissioner that

This is a simple question. When is someone going to tell Rob Manfred that his game of Russian Roulette is threatening the future of baseball? How many more series between teams with COVID or close to outbreaks, have to be canceled before the commissioner sees the light?

Below is a list of postponed games as of Friday, August 8, 2020:

  • Marlins-Orioles four-game home-and-home series (July 27–30)
  • Yankees-Phillies four-game home-and-home series (July 27–30)
  • Marlins-Nationals three-game series (July 31-Aug. 2)
  • Phillies-Blue Jays three-game series (July 31-Aug. 2)
  • Brewers-Cardinals three-game series (July 31-Aug. 2)
  • Cardinals-Tigers four-game series (Aug. 3–6)
  • Cardinals-Cubs three-game series (Aug. 7–9)

Twenty-four games involving ten teams, each with 26 players, several coaches, and support staff moving around to major US cities with direct links to COVID-19.

It doesn’t take a genius, (yes Donald, this is the way you spell it), to figure out a pattern. Manfred’s response? There is “ no reason to quit”. So, here ya go folks. While Major League Baseball bravely presses on, announcing that they have a “strong commitment” to the health and safety of all involved, they have forgotten one very important piece that is out of baseball’s control.

What about the people who live in those cities? Has anyone considered their health and safety?

MLB has been quick to cast the players as villains, outing the Florida Marlins team for going to clubs during their off time. True enough, but these are human beings who make the same proportional lapses in judgment as, well, the rest of society.

This is what happens when we give too much emphasis on the ‘hero’ worship of athletes and celebrities. Other people follow like lemmings and the next thing you know…

You Have A Pandemic!

Some players have taken a stand and refused to play out the abridged season. Kudos to them for having the fortitude to do the right thing. They have families to protect. Why aren’t others thinking in those terms? Puzzling to be sure.

This plan was doomed from the start. Now, MLB looks like a cruel pathetic joke. So much for the game I love. I’ve written about this before, but I held out the naive hope that cooler, (smarter) heads would prevail.

I’m going to use a baseball scenario here to make this as clear as possible. Mr. Manfred, if you really care about baseball, and more importantly its fans, please think about this.

It’s the bottom of the ninth, the bases are loaded, and there are two outs. Your team is down three runs. Are you seriously thinking about bunting again?

Hit the Grand Slam Mr. Commissioner, for everyone’s sake.
