Barbenheimer:The cinema event of the year
Which movie will you watch first?
Things like these weren’t always such a huge deal. I don’t recall any memes being made about the July 18 openings of “The Dark Knight” and “Mamma Mia!” 15 years ago. I doubt memes existed at the time. Back then, we were all still using MySpace. However, “Barbenheimer” fever has been raging across the country this summer, with people enthralled by the seemingly amazing novelty of two films geared at different audiences being released on the same day. To put Greta Gerwig’s caustic, self-aware toy narrative up against Christopher Nolan’s gloomy World War II docudrama is funny, I suppose. But the sad reality is that Hollywood used to regularly release films like “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer.” Instead of merely incredibly expensive sequels and remakes aimed at 40-year-old teenage boys, there used to be a wide selection of movies in multiplexes that appealed to all kinds of demographics. The fact that “Barbenheimer” has gained such a following is a critique of the severely constrained menu we have been given since the blockbuster fracturing of the cinema business. People’s level of excitement indicates a hunger Hollywood should pay attention to.

- The good news is that the critical responses to the two films have been overwhelmingly positive as release day approaches. Barbie gained an advantage over Oppenheimer by breaking its review embargo in the late afternoon of July 18 as opposed to at noon on July 19. Directed by Greta Gerwig, has been praised as a daring, ambitious film. Barbie: A Playfully Meta Interpretation by Greta Gerwig attempts to address every debate that has ever been made concerning the impact of the doll on American culture.
- Greta Gerwig’s Barbie currently has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 90% and has gotten mostly positive reviews.
- On the other hand, our logistics poet laureate is Christopher Nolan. The Manhattan Project would seem to be a suitable subject for the “Dunkirk” director because he enjoys crafting movies about complex problem-solving systems. But even so,you would not be ready for the brutality and captivating weirdness of his “Oppenheimer.”
- The reviews for Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, which depicts the tale of the “father of the atomic bomb,” were unanimously favorable. Most of them commended the epic scope, vistas, and performances of the movie, as well as the way Nolan explores Oppenheimer’s legacy and ambiguities.
Barbie box office (as of July 21, US only): $22.3 million
The film is almost certain to be Gerwig’s biggest box-office debut of her career. Fair enough, Lady Bird, a small independent film, eventually made $78.9 million after only $364,437, whereas Little Women had a strong $16.7 million opening and eventually made $218 million at the global box office.
Oppenheimer box office (as of July 21, US only): $10.5 million
According to Boxoffice Pro, Oppenheimer isn’t anticipated to surpass Barbie in its opening weekend, but with a predicted range of $52 million to $72 million, it could still have one of the top five opening weekends in the US for the summer of 2023.
In spite of how dissimilar Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer initially seem, the two movies are so closely related that they have inspired a portmanteau moniker, much like two famous people in a tabloid-friendly relationship. Barbenheimer’s summer is now.
