What is Hidden Under the Banana Tree Leaves?

poetry prompt: clumsiness

Photo by Phoenix Han on Unsplash

overshadowed by the wide banana leaves

thick trunk, big leaves,

a saying that describes perfectly who I am — of constantly dropping and shattering fragiles, of tripping on flat surfaces, of slipping on non-existent banana peels.

Saying: 香蕉樹影 (the shadow of a banana tree) Second layer meaning: 粗枝大葉 (large trunk, big leaves) Metaphorical meaning: clumsy (common old saying)

Sometimes, I learn Cantonese slang it has several layers before you dig up the true underlying meaning. Imagine if someone just came up to you and told you that you have the shadow of a banana tree and in 0.2 seconds you have to extract that they’re actually saying that you’re clumsy.

Tagging Elle Beau ❇︎ | Rachael Ann Sand | Lori Lamothe | Kele Mogotsi | Chris Mooney-Singh | Shivangi Patel| Caroline de Braganza| Dana Sanford | if you’re up to it and anyone else interested in today’s prompt: clumsiness.

How to join: include the original post of the person who tagged you for reference and tag 5–10 other people (or simply ‘tag all’) who might be interested in this prompt! (Ps, there’s no deadline!)

Lucy Dan 蛋小姐 (she/her/她) is definitely the shadow of a banana tree though, clumsiness is the hallmark of who I am and possibly all 900% of misfortune that befalls me.
