3 Websites To Entertain Your Kids (And Yourself) For Hours

Sometimes we just need that spark of novelty back in our lives

Play is incredibly important. While there are games (online and offline) that we find ourselves returning to, I sometimes find joy in exploring something entirely novel for an entire afternoon.

I’ve compiled a list of my favourite new websites that fall under this category, because sometimes you just need that break from the monotony and the routine.

Don’t forget to check out the challenges that made exploring these websites especially fun (and funny)!

Pink Trombone

The Pink Trombone app sound production in your mouth, operated by your mouse (although a touchscreen works far better). It allows you to explore how syllables and vowels are made based on the shape of the mouth.

Speaking is so automatic that it’s so hard to even imagine that there are so many moving parts to it but this app will allow you to experience exactly how many parts are needed.

It’s also just really funny to listen to.

Challenge: see if you can use the different components to make this app say your name.

AI duet

The AI duet app uses artificial intelligence to provide feedback and harmonizing notes in response to notes that you’ve pressed on the keyboard. This app works with the mouse, keyboard, or touch screens.

Here is a sample of what I created:

Challenge: play the notes of a famous song (e.g., twinkle twinkle little star or Game of Thrones theme song if you’re advanced) and see what the AI spits back at you.

Nvidia Gaugan

The Nvidia Gaugan is piece of AI that allows you to create photorealistic landscapes based on things that you’ve drawn in their app.

Challenge: build a house on water. Put a luscious forest in the middle of a barren, waterless desert. Do what your heart desires.

Sources of inspiration

  • Nvidia Gaugan and the AI duet were discovered via this tik tok video!
  • Pink Trombone was sent to me by a friend, because I’m that one friend you send all the weirdest things to. So if you find something up to par on weirdness, don’t be shy to tweet me.

Lucy (The Egg Girl) spent an inordinate amount of time on these websites and hope you have fun doing so too! She’s written poems where every word has an “e” in it, explained why listicles aren’t the end of the world, and tracked her reading list here (seeking recommendations!).
