I sat in my car on the darkest part of the street watching Sawyerâs house. I had searched his office where classified folders usually live and I didnât find my folder. I came to the conclusion that since it was my classified folder he would hide it where no one would look and that was his home. I had chewed my nail so much that it didnât have any nail polish left. I hadnât chewed my nails since I was a girl, and Iâm usually good in stressful situations but this was something different.
He was supposed to leave soon with his family for vacation, and I was going to have all the time I needed to search his house. I canvassed it a few days ago to make sure he didnât have any cameras. He did have a security system so that was a little tricky to hack into without being caught to get his pass-code.
After a while, the door finally opened and his wife walked out with keys in her hand and pressed the unlock button. Their SUV was a newer model so the trunk automatically opened. Behind her, Sawyer and his sons carried the suitcases out and packed them in the trunk. They all went back in the house for a few minutes and then came back out. I watched as he shut the door and entered the code.
I didnât immediately get out of my car but waited for another hour. I wanted to make sure that they didnât come back for something they left. I didnât tell Ameria about this part of my plan because she would have talked me out of it. I needed to do this and find out who I really was.
Growing up I never truly felt lonely because I had Ameria and Sawyer so the part of my brain that wondered where I came from I pushed away. Ever since I learned how we got to the agency that voice has been louder about finding out the truth and wanting to know why my records were classified.
Finally, I worked up the nerve and got out of the car. I looked around to make sure no one was watching and walked up to the door and punched in the code. The house was dark so I took out my flashlight which wasnât super bright. I didnât want to turn on the lights just in case someone saw them leave. It would have been suspicious that the lights were on and their car wasnât in the driveway.
I had been in this house many times growing up so I knew exactly where his office was located. I quickly walked up the spiral staircase letting the flashlight lead.
Once I got to the door of his office I stood there for a little while, placed my hand on the door, and let the coolness run through me. I thought about turning back and just letting life continue as it had been but I knew until I figured out my own stuff I could be of no help to Darius. I turned the knob and opened the door.
I first started in the locked drawer in his desk but couldnât find anything. I eventually moved to the filing cabinet next to his desk and looked there. I finally found the folder in a locked filing cabinet. As I was about to open the folder the light in the office turned.
I turned around, âOh crap.â
