B is for … Botswana

My A-Z travel destinations

I’ve been to Beijing, I’ve breezed through Bobo-Dioulasso in Burkina Faso, have browsed parts of Berlin, ambled through Banff, AB.

But Botswana must be one of my favourite B destinations.

Actually, I don’t see it so much as a destination — it’s more of a journey. Let me show you something of our own “road” trip through parts of this fantastic country, during May 2019. As you could expect, we collected numerous stories and took a large number of photographs. Today I will not try to take you along the entire route but will show you some highlights.

Let’s start with an image that indicates our preferred mode of travel.

We obviously visited Botswana’s most well-known feature, the massive inland Okavango Delta, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage list. This forms where the Okavango River flows into a low-lying area demarcated by higher ground on the Southeast, and then the water just evaporates or sinks into the sandy soil. More about that here on Wikipedia, if you’re interested. The area floods seasonally, but in the dry season (when we visited), only a few channels remain. Trees grow on the areas that remain drier, year-round, while the lower areas are covered with grasses and numerous animal pathways, leading to and from the water.

It’s impossible to describe Botswana without mentioning wildlife, of course. There are a number of National Parks, and I expect that most people are aware of the many elephants in the country. The next image shows a slightly smaller, but still very majestic animal.

We did see many elephants, and we were also camping in locations where, I must admit, we did not see any actual elephants. One of these places was our campsite at the Kaziikini Community Camp.

There were many sandy stretches on our route, so we did have one episode in the Moremi Game Reserve, where we were grateful for another vehicle with a towrope… © Willem Slootweg, May 2019

That new bridge connecting Botswana with Zambia is obviously more efficient, but does remove some of the romance and excitement of the trip…

As I come to the end of this particular story, how else to conclude, than with one of the fantastic sunsets experienced, over the Botswana bush?
