As a Solo Traveler, I Didn’t Always Travel Alone
Solo traveling doesn’t mean you are always solo

During the pandemic, I was talking with friends, and one of them asked me,
“Hey, you’re a solo traveler, so you’ve been alone while traveling the world, right?”
Even though the word “solo” exists in the term “solo traveler,” solo travelers aren’t necessarily alone for every moment they travel.
Many people are traveling solo around the globe right now.
Some of them choose to keep to themselves. They’ll eat, walk through museums, and get on flights and trains all by themselves most of the time. If that’s their travel style, then that’s great for them.
Other solo travelers love to connect with others at every chance that they get. At restaurants, hostels, bars, on a bus to another city, you name it. If that’s what floats their boat, then that’s fantastic for them.
As a solo traveler, I always went with my gut while traveling and tried to understand how I felt every moment.
Sometimes there would be days, even weeks, where I feel like being alone in my own company to eat, work, or rest in my hostel or Airbnb.
There were other days and weeks when I was very social. And when I felt particularly outgoing, I made new friends. Some of these new friends I only talked to that day, and some of them I have on social media, and we continue to message each other today.
With other new friends, I connected with them so much that I ended up either traveling with them or visiting them in their home countries. For instance, I met a friend in a gelato shop in Genoa, whom I later visited in her hometown of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
So, if you want to take up solo traveling and are afraid of loneliness, know that, yes, occasionally, you will be lonely. But there will be plenty of opportunities to meet new people. All you have to do is get out there and meet them.
Have you traveled solo before and been alone, with others, or both?
