Online businesses are fickle; when I started my Teachers Pay Teachers (TpT) business three years ago, I worked long hours during weekdays and weekends to create math content to sell on the TpT website.
I saw growth with each passing year, but I knew it wasn’t increasing how I thought it would. I also concluded that I was concentrating only on a small part of the market; not everyone was a teacher or a math teacher.
I had built my store to a nice size, and I thought if I left it alone and marketed it only on Facebook and Pinterest, I would see some sales; I left it alone for the better part of the 2021 calendar year and did minimum marketing.
The result was sales between $17 — $30 per month; that wasn’t enough to consider retiring earlier than I wanted to.
Medium, Online Writing Jobs, and the Business Side of Writing
I have been concentrating on writing on Medium and securing other writing contracts online since I started writing every day on Medium about the middle of November 2021. My writing progress has been steady, and my income on Medium has increased a little.
I have also found that there is valuable information on Medium. Every once in a while, I read an article that helps with my writing and building a writing business.

Both articles gave me a sense of what freelance writers do. Another article I came across from her was “3 Incredible Websites That Pay $100+ for every Post You Create Part 2.” This article gives you the sites where you can find contract work.
Jerikho’s article about freelance writing on Medium was one of the first I read on Medium. I first Googled the term to find out what it meant to be a freelance writer, but then Jerikho’s article brought the meaning and everything about freelance writing to life because she is a freelance writer full-time.
Her other article “Being a Beginner Freelance Writer is a Crazy Ride, Don’t You Think?” provided me with a link to a copywriting course from Udemy, The Complete Copywriting Course: Write to Sell Like a Pro by Tasmin Henderson.
I downloaded it, and I have been learning about copywriting since.
Motivational Articles About Making Money Online
There are many articles about authors making money online; I enjoy reading Kristina God and Tim Denning articles because they are informative and provide practical tips to the business side of writing.
Takeaway
In the four and a half months of writing on Medium, I realized that some of the success stories for some authors on Medium took years to accomplish.
I have also learned to be consistent in writing every day; I think that is one thing that I got out of Medium about writing; this transition into writing has also exercised my muscle of lifelong learning.
I have always believed that someone should be a lifelong learner. Learning could be through formal schooling or online platforms such as Medium; there is always something new I can learn.
Five dollars a month to write and learn new things is a pretty nice price for the cost of learning something new.
Final Thought
The four-month education on Medium taught me more about writing than I knew before Medium. I also search for articles that help me grow as a writer.
The DIY education or learner describes my past four months on Medium best. I cannot think of a better place to start a writing career than on Medium.
