2 Things You Should Know Before You Start Your Writing “Career”
The first step to becoming a writer is becoming a great reader.

You want to write. You feel there is a story you need to tell, and the only way to do it is by putting pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard).
But where do you start? How do you get people interested in your writing? Every writer has different answers to these questions, and some will lead you down a path that leads nowhere.
Don’t be discouraged! Here are some things you should know before starting on your own “career” as a writer.
1. Find the right platform for you
When you’re starting, you may want to start a blog, but be careful. If you have no writing skills, your blog will turn into a waste of time.
I’ve had blogs where I made one or two posts a week, but I don’t do that anymore. In the first year or two of blogging, it’s important to focus on learning the basics.
As you become a more skilled writer, you can take your writing to a more professional level. The key to success is finding a platform that suits your needs.
Some bloggers find that they can use their blogs to make money. There are ways to monetize your blog, but you’ll need to invest the time into building it first.
For example, you can use WordPress to post. There are a variety of blogging platforms, just find one that fits you!
2. Figure Out Your Audience
The first thing you should do before starting your writing career is to decide your audience. What will they want to read about? What will be important to them?
Some writers will choose a niche, such as, for example, high school-aged girls who like paranormal romances.
But there’s always room to expand your niche by writing about other aspects of your favorite subject.
If you’re like most writers, you like books that allow you to get away from the real world for a bit, whether it be a short story or a novella.
Don’t forget, however, that real life doesn’t have to stop for your writing career. You can put your research ahead of the writing and research topics of your choice for your next story.
