Summary

Army Lt. Caron Nazario, a person of color, was unjustly harassed, pepper-sprayed, and mistreated by two white police officers during a traffic stop in Windsor, Virginia, despite remaining calm and complying with their demands.

Abstract

Army Lt. Caron Nazario, who is of Latino and African-American descent, was subjected to a harrowing and unjustified encounter with two white police officers in Windsor, Virginia, on December 5, 2020. Despite being in full Army fatigues and driving a new vehicle with temporary paper license tags, Nazario was pulled over under questionable pretenses. The situation escalated when the officers, Joe Gutierrez and Daniel Crocker, demanded Nazario exit his vehicle, drew their guns, and ultimately pepper-sprayed him multiple times without provocation. Nazario's decision to drive to a well-lit gas station before stopping, in an effort to ensure his safety, likely saved his life. The incident, captured on multiple cameras, including Nazario's own recording and the officers' bodycams, has highlighted issues of racial profiling, police brutality, and the lack of de-escalation tactics by law enforcement. The officers' conduct has been widely condemned as an abuse of power and a stark example of systemic racism within the police force.

Opinions

  • The police officers' behavior was deemed irrational, out of control, and indicative of a broader issue of systemic racism in law enforcement.
  • The officers' actions were not in line with their duty to protect and serve, particularly in communities of color.
  • The incident suggests a double standard in policing, where people of color are disproportionately targeted and mistreated.
  • The use of pepper spray against Nazario was unnecessary and reflected an aggressive and confrontational approach by the officers.
  • The presence of body cameras did not deter the officers from engaging in misconduct, raising questions about the effectiveness of such measures in promoting police accountability.
  • The article implies that the officers may have had a preconceived bias against Nazario due to the color of his skin and the newness of his vehicle.
  • The author advocates for a major lawsuit against the officers involved, suggesting that financial repercussions could be a means of addressing and deterring such misconduct.
  • The incident is compared to other high-profile cases of police brutality against people of color, emphasizing the ongoing nature of this issue in American society.

Army Lt. Nazario was Pepper Prayed For no Reason by Out of Control Cops

How Nazario Saved his Life by Remaining Calm and Driving to a Lighted Gas Station Area Before Interacting with the Cops

Recently a video surfaced on social media and went viral depicting a man of color being harassed by two white cops. December 5, 2020, Army Lt. Nazario on one fine day found himself accosted by two rambo cops who demanded him to exit his car while he attempted to inform them that he was afraid due to what might happen to him, and one cop responded, “You should be afraid!” His words said it all.

These police offers terrified Army Lt. Nazario in Virginia as they were unreasonable, irrational and obviously out of control per three videos. As Lt. Nazario remained calm, he made a concerted effort to reason with the two unreasonable officers, especially since his actions had not warranted such behavior. The calmer the solider remained the angrier these cops became and was clearly out of control. So much for protecting and serving the community. Guess that applies to the white community and not the community of color. If this is true, then these cops should be reassigned to other communities not of color where this type of behavior could be used and accepted. Haha!

What happened to de-escalation? Two cops, not in fear of their lives incite one alone man of color for some negative egotistical purpose. The solider was so in control when he came to a stop, sorry the same cannot be said about these cops, that he placed his cell phone on the dashboard to record what was about to happen. Smart solider. His actions bespoke survival. This is call knowing how to survive and deal with an ugly situation, not wanting to be another George Floyd. While trying to reason with the cops, he was pepper sprayed repeatedly, barely able to breathe as he tried to block his eyes and mouth from the spray, but hands remained up in sight as one of the cops sprayed more and more like a wild lunatic. Their behavior is an atrocity to the badge that adorns their uniform.

Just recently, a bodycam video taken in Windsor, Virginia regarding this horrific unjust racist act by these cops, had the nation reeling. It showed Mr. Caron Nazario, a U.S. Army second of Latino and African-American descent, being pulled over at night while driving to Petersburg, Virginia. He was in full Army fatigues while driving his brand-new SUV with paper license tags.

Now think about this, you just bought a new car, no one walks out with metal license plates, everyone gets temporary paper license plates, and registration papers that are displayed in the front window. Now having stated that fact, if these cops had a problem with the paper license plates, or the car being stolen, perhaps they should have checked the front window display or asked for registration. In my opinion, it looked like an excuse to pull over a another person of color especially since he was driving a brand-new car. There seem to be a mindset that people of color cannot or should not own or drive a brand new car. Been there, done that.

Nevertheless, once accosted by the police cruiser, Lt. Nazario drove about a mile to get to a better lighted area to a gas station where he stopped. This move saved his life. A great lesson for anyone being stopped by a cop in an isolated and/or dark area, because now a days, you just don’t know what or who you may encounter from a police car. Lt. Nazario was not confrontational with the officers but they were confrontational with him. Really, breaks your heart to see this behavior from two cops who wear the badge for the wrong reason. Even while their guns were drawn, one cop was pepper spraying the soldier’s face and eyes, incessantly an unnecessarily. After being pepper sprayed, he was violently thrown to the ground and handcuffed for being a solider, a human being, and a man of color driving a new car. Racism spoke very loud and clear. Being stopped while black and driving a new car is nothing new.

Thank God for cameras, they showed the world how unjustly Mr. Nazario was treated. Three cameras, one from Nazario and two were the cops cameras. You’d think these cops behavior would have been better knowing that their own cameras showed their actions while on duty. They didn’t care because old habits die hard. This is what they know and somehow have been protected from impunities. Outside of being a cop, where has common decency and respect gone within the police department.

Mr. Nazario did all the right things making every attempt to deescalate the situation not wanting to be another George Floyd and so many other people of color who have died unjustly at the hands of rambo cops. Note, he was not armed and was out numbered by two armed cops with bad attitudes, and spoke in aggressive tones. A badge and a gun gave these cops a false sense of superiority. Napoleon complex spoke loud and clear.

The police department around the country has lots of bad apples and like they say, “it only take one bad apple to spoil the bunch.” Lt. Nazario was in the right and these cops were clearly in the wrong, therefore a major lawsuit must be spending. Why not?
