Duante Wright, a 20-year-old Black man, was fatally shot by a police officer during a traffic stop for an air freshener violation in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, sparking protests and highlighting systemic racism and police brutality against people of color.

Abstract

The article discusses the tragic death of Duante Wright, who was shot by a police officer under the pretext of a minor traffic violation for air fresheners obstructing the view from his rear-view mirror. The incident, which occurred near the site of George Floyd's murder, has reignited outrage and protests against systemic racism and police violence in the United States. The officer involved, despite claiming to have mistakenly drawn her gun instead of a taser, has been criticized for contributing to the pattern of racially motivated killings by law enforcement. The article underscores the disparity in police response to the Black Lives Matter protests compared to the January 6th Capitol insurrection and calls for accountability, justice, and systemic change to address the ongoing racial pandemic and domestic terrorism inflicted upon communities of color.

Opinions

  • The article suggests that the "protect and serve" ethos of police departments is failing Black and Brown communities, with officers instead employing a "shoot to kill" approach, even for minor infractions.
  • It criticizes the continued prevalence of racist police behavior, despite the high-profile murder of George Floyd and the ongoing trial of Derek Chauvin.
  • The use of tear gas and rubber bullets against protesters in Brooklyn Center is juxtaposed with the lack of similar force during the Capitol insurrection, highlighting a perceived double standard in law enforcement's response to people of color versus white insurrectionists.
  • The article calls for systemic changes, including legal action against police departments and officers involved in racially motivated violence, and suggests that voting power, economic influence, and education are key to rectifying societal inequities.
  • It questions the credibility of the police and local media in their portrayal of protestors and suggests that the police's quick deployment of the National Guard to disperse protesters is indicative of systemic racism.
  • The article expresses skepticism about the official narrative surrounding Wright's traffic stop, suggesting that the air freshener violation and subsequent discovery of an outstanding warrant were mere pretexts for racial profiling.
  • It criticizes the inaction of the second officer at the scene and calls for accountability beyond administrative leave for officers involved in such incidents.
  • The article argues that if Duante Wright had been white, the situation would likely not have escalated to lethal force, implying a racial bias in the officer's decision to shoot.
  • It condemns the veteran officer's claim of mistaking a gun for a taser, questioning how a seasoned professional could make such a mistake, and calls for her to be fired and tried for murder.
  • The article advocates for a thorough investigation, including the review of body camera footage, to uncover the truth about Wright's death.
  • It concludes by emphasizing that living as a person of color should not be a crime and calls for an end to the systemic injustices faced by Black Americans.

A short story about Duante Wright becoming a victim of home grown police domestic terrorisms and racial pandemic on the rise against people of color

Protect and serve in the police department seem to be on the back burner of practically non-existing in the Black and Brown communities. Rather, it is shoot to kill even if its a minor traffic stop infraction pertaining to dangling air fresheners in the rear view mirror. Really, Mr. cop? Tell the real truth why you really stopped this young man and his girlfriend. Did it all have anything to do with skin color by any chance? Let’s keep it real!

George Floyd blatant murder at the hand of a rambo racist cop, Chauvin, standing trial right now, and yet these racist cop are yet shooting people of color at an alarming rate, around the Country and even in Minnesota very near where George Floyd was murdered by Chauvin, 10 miles away to be exact. You’d think these cops would at least by now try to be on their best behavior, if that is possible. I think not, given the plight of things happening just this weekend in Minnesota, another young man’s life snuffed away for nothing other than living while Black.

Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, a cop fired tear gas and rubber bullets at protesters who took to the streets to protest the shooting of a 20 year old black man, Duante Wright, during a traffic stop, another excuse to harass and shot another Black man. The cop had a gun, did he fear for his life against someone who had no gun? Here is where racism pulled the trigger and needs to be called out as such. I pray the Wright Family sues Brooklyn Center, same as with the George Floyd’s family. Money won’t bring a love one back but it will make a loud statement that the city, the police department, the racist officers and the police union need to pay and pay dearly. Daunte Wright was the relative of the Minnesota Governor, Tim Walz, who addressed the issue of another Black man’s life been taken away at the hands of law enforcement.

Compare the insurrection on January 6, 2021, insurrectionists and many racist right wing hate group stormed the Capitol like they had a right and I didn’t see any rubber bullets or chemical agents, as a matter of fact what I saw was no cops in sight to help the Capitol security as the World again looked on and later saw a video of the members of the prior administration being very jovial as they watched the insurrections stormed and disrupt the capitol unlike anything ever seen before at the Capitol. This weekend, a racist cop shoots an African American male and rioting erupts and the National Guard is called out immediately. Need I say more about how there is systemic racism and homegrown terrorists embodied in many facets of the America justice.

America not only has blood on its hands along with much racism, double standards for people of color and almost any other inequity that one could imagine in society. The list is endless and the time has come to begin shortening that list by any means necessary. Voting power, dollar power and education over time will triumph much wrong to be righted across the nation.

Racist cops need to not be placed on administrative leave, but unpaid leave when they commit a crime against humanity, until a thorough investigation could be done. If found guilty, racist cops should be barred from joining any other police department in the Country or elsewhere.

When its people of color protesting, the police shoot rubber bullets, which are damaging to the body, along with any other disarming chemical paraphernalia against protestors throwing rocks, bags of garbage and water bottles.

Regarding the protestors, there were appropriate 200 protestors gathered around the Brooklyn Center police headquarters, as the National Guard was called immediately to disperse them within a hour or two. During the insurrection at the Capitol, it was almost four or five hours before the Capitol security received any assistance from outside security and there were thousands upon thousands of insurrectionists. The insurrectionists tore up the capitol inside and out and from the roof top to the ground, literally.

In addition to the Brooklyn Center protest, there was a second protest at a near by shopping mall where looting, vandalizing police cars and businesses occurred according to the local police and local media. Honestly, can we believe their assessment? People of color always get labeled negatively in one manner or another by the very racist that inflicts much pain that may cause some of these calamities.

You would think these racist cops would at least contain their ill behavior especially while the Chauvin trial is in session and the tension in the city runs high with anticipation of the verdict. But know, these rambo cops think they have the legal right to take the life of another young African American.

Brooklyn Center Mayor, Mike Elliott, stated, “let’s be safe and go home.” Cops killing innocent Black people and that’s all he can say. He needs to be voted out during the next election or even recalled could be possible with enough signatures. If you are not part of the solution, then clearly you are part of the problem.

Now, let’s see why Mr. Wright was pulled over by the cop. He was pulled over due to air fresheners dangling from his rear-view mirror, which is illegal there, as a traffic violation and at that point it was discovered he had an outstanding arrest warrant for smoking a joint when he was seventeen. Anything to harass, kill and deny human rights. First he was tazed and then shot. Prior to being shot, he called his mother and informed her that he had been pulled over. The mother heard the cops telling her son to get out of the vehicle, following was a scuffle as the cop yelled, “Daunte, don’t run.” The call ended and when she redialed his number was told by his girlfriend, he was dead in the driver’s seat.

The police attempted to arrest him, before he got back into his car. He drove off and officer shot him. This young man probably assumed it was better to run and hopefully save his life but it did not end that way. Sorry to say but if Duante Wright was white, this would never shot at him but drove after him to stop him. We see the police chases on television all the time.

There were two cops, why didn’t the other cop deescalate the situation? What good was he? He should be made accountable for his inaction. Mr. Wright drove several blocks before running into another vehicle and died at the scene. Time to look at the officer’s body camera to get the truth of the entire matter. All this madness and murder of a young man started with a dangling air fresheners. If he was white, the story would have never ended as such. Any excuse, to stop a person of color seem to be on these racist cops’ daily menu. Living while Black has become crime against humanity. The saga continues but sooner or later this road will end.

The rambo killing cop, a veteran of twenty years on the police force, who claims she thought she pulled her tazer and not her gun. A veteran doesn’t know the difference between a tazer and a gun, really?! This cop needs to be fired and tried for murder. End of story.
