Are You Married to Your Goals?
Embrace the Flexibility of Goal Setting

Are goals tied to us permanently? Just reflect on who you were five years ago — are you the same person today? No, you’ve undoubtedly evolved and grown. If we, as individuals, change over time, then why should our goals remain static?
Often, we become married to our goals. We set them, establish rules for them, and then strive to achieve them without assessing our progress, priorities, or whether they’re still relevant.
But it’s crucial to recognize that as individuals, we evolve, and our goals must evolve with us. Personally, I’ve experienced this firsthand.
- As I matured, I realized the importance of learning AI skills for my future career instead of focusing on outdated technologies.
- Similarly, after becoming a parent, my goals shifted to prioritize my children’s well-being. This included teaching them, dedicating more time to them, and focusing on their health and play times.
- With age, I’ve also recognized the significance of focusing on a healthy diet and regular exercise. The sight of five white hairs on my head😁 served as a wake-up call, reminding me to take better care of myself and prompting a shift in my health-related goals.
Goals aren’t set in stone; they should adapt to changes in our lives and circumstances. When we become too rigid in our pursuit of goals, we risk disappointment and hinder our ability to embrace new aspirations. This happens because we fail to reassess our current goals’ relevance and achievability — we simply chase after them without reflection.
Achieving goals isn’t the ultimate victory; rather, it’s essential to plan our goals, prioritize them, monitor progress, and ensure they remain achievable. When we acknowledge personal growth and change, it’s natural — and even beneficial — for our goals to evolve alongside us.
So, don’t remain tethered to outdated goals. Embrace the new you and allow your goals to evolve accordingly.
