Are You Getting Bored of Writing on Medium?

My suggestions for some difficult areas

There are many reasons why someone might be bored of writing on Medium. I have my fair share of boredom too. I will share purely from my perspective; you may have experienced it differently.

I will discuss five areas of concern:

1. We are alone in our writings

Unlike other jobs where we will need to work with a team to handle projects or accomplish specific tasks, writing is a kind of work we do in solitude.

We need that space to be alone because we must think as we write. However, when we do it frequently, there will come a time when we feel a little tired of things.

Hence, we sometimes read of writers who took a long break and had difficulty returning enthusiastically to active writing.

I would suggest reading and enjoying other writers’ articles to counter this. Sometimes, when we follow and read someone’s post, we get inspired to write something similar. You can take someone’s idea and share your perspective on that topic.

Of course, we must not copy any part of their essay. We need to be original and give credit to them if you ever need to quote them.

2. We faced difficulty in building a following

Some writers put in the effort to write but fail to make a strong connection with their readers. A simple reason is that they did not personalise their points to share.

When we see someone listing many points, it seems like the writer has gotten them from a Google search. Nobody wants to read points taken out from a search engine.

However, if you can add your struggles or feelings to those points, you personalise your sharing, and readers will be able to relate.

Hence, anyone can get guidance from Google search or ChatGPT, but we must personalise the points. If you personalise the topics in your articles, you become authentic, and people always appreciate authenticity in writing.

3. Burnout because you put in too much effort

It is the opposite compared with someone who lists their points and does nothing else. Some writers put in days of research to add details like where they get the statistics, like percentages, ratios and comments, to the dot.

It looks impressive, but because of their efforts, writing a single article can take up hours, if not days. If they enjoy doing so, we give them due respect.

The risk of doing too much is that they may experience burnout, especially in their first year on Medium.

Hence we need to understand our limits and appropriate time and energy so that we do not get burned out and the game ends.

4. Difficulty in standing out from the crowd

In whatever topics we write about, another writer may pen better ideas and phrase words more eloquently than ourselves. It leads to nowhere if we constantly compare ourselves.

For example, someone in Medium may have written on my topic. It is still alright because my perspective may differ from someone else’s.

With due respect to our capabilities, there will always be better writers and worse writers. We become discouraged if we compare ourselves with someone who can write better. We become prideful if we compare ourselves with someone who could not write as well.

Hence, we should believe in our style of writing. The world is big enough to find a following who will eventually appreciate our style.

5. Difficulty in generating revenue from our writing in Medium

Look at some successful motivational speakers in our world. Many of them started their careers giving many free talks until they developed a following who liked their delivery and content.

Likewise, some of us may do very well on Medium one day, but this has to start from somewhere. Medium is a good platform for us to learn how to write better and better.

A journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step; probably, we have already taken 10, 50 or 100 steps. Keep going until we see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Whatever success we envisage ourselves to attain, someone is already there. There are writers on Medium with more than 50,000 followers.

In summary

Boredom is unavoidable in writing unless we can overcome it by seeing the value we can deliver to our readers. Your experiences in life may be unique and special.

Sharing your stories on this Medium community may encourage, inspire, or challenge others. Keep focusing on doing the right things.
