Summary

An anti-masker in California refused to wear a mask at a Panera Bread, using the flawed logic that since pants don't block fart smells, masks can't protect against COVID-19, highlighting the broader issue of self-centered resistance to public health measures during the pandemic.

Abstract

A video has gone viral on social media showing a woman being denied service at a Panera Bread in California for refusing to wear a mask, despite being provided one by the staff. Her argument, equating the inability of pants to contain fart smells with the ineffectiveness of masks in preventing the spread of COVID-19, has drawn widespread criticism and disbelief. This incident follows another where a woman urinated on a store floor in protest of mask-wearing policies. With over 4 million cases and approaching 150,000 deaths in the United States, these anti-mask sentiments are juxtaposed against the collective efforts in countries like Canada, where mask-wearing is widely accepted as a civic duty to protect public health. The article underscores the importance of masks as a scientifically proven measure to combat the pandemic and calls for unity and responsibility in the face of a health crisis that has been exacerbated by those who prioritize personal convenience over the well-being of others.

Opinions

  • The author views the anti-masker's logic as absurd and dangerous, given the scientific evidence supporting the effectiveness of masks in preventing the spread of COVID-19.
  • There is a clear frustration with individuals who refuse to comply with mask mandates, seeing them as selfish and ignorant of the seriousness of the pandemic.
  • The article suggests that the anti-masker's behavior is not only illogical but also a blatant disregard for the health and safety of others.
  • The author praises Canada's approach to managing the pandemic, highlighting the country's successful containment strategies and the collective mindset of its citizens.
  • The piece criticizes the entitlement of those who claim mask mandates infringe on their freedoms, particularly noting that the majority of anti-maskers are white individuals claiming government oppression.
  • It emphasizes the civic responsibility to wear masks, framing it as a simple and practical act that can save lives, contrasting this with the disproportionate and irresponsible reactions of anti-maskers.
  • The author expresses disbelief and dismay at the level of ignorance displayed by the woman in the Panera Bread incident, especially her aggressive act of blowing air at masked customers.
  • The article concludes with a strong appeal for people to wear masks, viewing this action as a fundamental aspect of overcoming the pandemic and ensuring public health.

Anti-Masker Refuses to Wear Mask Because ‘Pants Don’t Block Fart Smells'

With logic like that, how can we even argue?

If you thought things couldn’t get much worse, think again.

The flimsiest argument of the entire COVID-19 pandemic has just gone public, and it’s a real doozy.

A video went viral this week on social media, showing that a woman is turned away from a Panera Bread establishment in California because she refused to wear a mask.

As you’ve already guessed, she didn’t take this so well.

Now, videos of entitled people being turned away because they won’t abide by the law of wearing masks in businesses are pretty common as we navigate the pandemic we’re all existing in.

But this video is especially priceless, because of the logic and argument this woman uses to justify why masks don’t work, and thus why she shouldn’t have to wear one is just too rich:

The above viral video comes just after piece of news from last week spread across headlines after a woman urinated on a store floor out of protest when she refused to wear a mask in a Verizon store and was asked to leave:

It’s horrifying how people can continue to shock us like this…

Disclaimer: this pandemic is no laughing matter.

By this date, more than 4 million cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed, closing in on 150,000 deaths in the United States. With horrific numbers like that, it’s only natural that national precautions be put in place to protect individual citizens and one another.

That said, despite how reasonable it is to take scientifically proven precautions to protect the greater good of one’s nation, there are plenty who refuse to abide for the most selfish of reasons.

These people, my friends, are anti-maskers. They are people who believe masks are a conspiracy brought upon the globe to strip us of our freedoms.

Unsurprisingly, the vast majority of them are entitled White people claiming they are being “oppressed and controlled by the government” through the law of wearing masks to slow the spread of coronavirus.

As a Canadian myself, where we’re nationally sitting at 114,000 confirmed cases and almost 9,000 deaths, we have contained the virus on the East Coast (where I live) to the point where we’ve been virtually sitting at zero confirmed daily cases for weeks.

And still, we wear masks when we go out.

Why? Because there’s a civic duty to protecting one another. Because we are not a country built on self-interest, but rather we are a land of universal health care and the Canadian Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) which has given every Canadian who has lost their jobs due to the COVID-19 pandemic $2,000 per month since March.

Watching from Canada, the unfolding of the pandemic in the US is beyond strange and disheartening to us.

And the Oscar for ‘Most Believing One’s Own Bullsh*t’ goes to…

Upon entering the establishment, this woman, who is being referred to as “Panera Bread Karen”, had a mask in hand (provided by staff) but not on her face.

When she caused a scene after being asked to leave, bystanders inquired as to why she wouldn’t just put on the mask she was holding in her hand.

That’s when she came out with this golden piece of philosophical genius:

“You think that mask is going to protect you? You fart out your a** and you can still smell it.”

I’ll just give that a moment to sink in…

You good? Okay, great… now, let’s dive into this statement.

I really must applaud this woman for keeping a straight face, and so boldly using this “pants don’t block fart smell” argument with such gumption.

It takes guts to say something so stupid and stand by it so adamantly.

That said, it really is baffling to see such a heated confrontation arise when this woman was:

  1. Entering property where they are within every right to uphold sanitary rules (also, it’s the law, but apparently that doesn’t matter),
  2. Was provided a mask by staff, and,
  3. Could have put it on for 3 short minutes of her life, gotten her food, and then left and taken it off.

Easy peasy.

But instead, she goes out of her way to antagonize other people around her while throwing a temper tantrum as if she’s more special than anyone else in the room, country, or known universe?

Just from a practical standpoint, she created so much extra hassle for herself, and has become the laughing stock on social media… all because putting a thin face covering on for 180 seconds of her life was too inconvenient?

It’s truly too ridiculous for words.

But wait — her ignorance went further than just stupidity and unproven scientific claims.

Despite holding a mask provided to her by staff that she could have just put on and gone on with her day, this woman’s ignorance knew no bounds.

In an effort to make what she believed in her pea-sized brain to be an effective point, she began blowing air in the faces of customers wearing masks with a snide smirk on her face.

What an utterly horrid woman.

In everyday circumstances, this act of blowing germs would just generally be disgusting — add a global pandemic with a highly contagious virus to the risk, and this is beyond irresponsible and inappropriate.

Quite frankly, she should be criminally charged for this.

Wearing masks shouldn’t be about politics — it’s about people’s survival and health. What part of that doesn’t compute for some people!?

Final word.

Here we are folks, the flimsiest of arguments the pandemic has ever seen.

Dear Ignorant Anti-Masker Lady — the potentially fatal coronavirus and farts are not a legitimate scientific comparison.

If you had told me years ago I would be writing about this… I’m not sure I would have believed you. Man, I have a weird job.

While we can find the humor in this situation, it’s also a staunch and scary reminder of how dangerous it can be with citizens couldn’t care less about the greater good, and prioritize their own convenience over the literal lives of other human beings.

In summary, take care of yourselves folks, take care of one another, and for f*ck sake wear a damn mask.
